The "Boss"

Just finished watching a show on speed channel all about the Boss 302. It's going to basically a full blown track car with license plates. They even Conway with 2 separate keys. One for DD and the "race" key. The "race" key enables launch control, enables the race tune, etc. Pretty ingenious! Once it comes out it will start from $40k and up. Anyways here a link about it.

Saw most of the show too. It was good. But I'd rather have a button than 2 different keys.

k20z3 01-30-2011 11:34 PM

I dont know I wish Ford went all out like the nismo as far as appearance all of their models look so similar.

Boost_lee 01-31-2011 02:05 AM

Just remember which key you give to the valet guy :eekdance:

:iagree::rofl2:

But if their gonna go through all that trouble with different keys, most cars have a valet key already anyway. Why not limit the crap out of it as well then, like 2000rpm's and 15mph or something.

flashburn 01-31-2011 08:05 AM

They did different keys so they don't need to worry about passing EPA with the "race" key. Since it is sold as a separate "track-only" addition, it doesn't need to pass any emissions testing or MPG standards.

^ This.

The Red key is a $300 "off road use only" option. This keeps the EPA away.

GZ3 01-31-2011 09:26 AM

hmmm cant wait, i just order my Red GTR start button...hoping for similar results!

Great idea. Then maybe I would actually use valet

I think the Laguna Seca edition is going to be a hot commodity. A true track ready car that you can take from the dealer showroom to the race track. Nismo should take note and produce a Nismo Suzuka edition.

LinPark 01-31-2011 10:10 AM

Would it kill Ford to get some new interior designers???? That looks like something right out of the 70's as have all the interiors coming out of the US lately. :shakes head:

Agreed. That would be sweet.

I really like mine. It's very well done. The only thing I don't like is the retro gauge fonts on the regular models. The GT500 and Boss have better faces IMO.

The retro font makes me puke, they did the same thing in the Camaro. Fortunately in that car you can bring up a digital speedometer in the center as the regular one is pretty unreadable.

I'm now starting to think about getting the Boss Laguna Seca next year and keeping the Z as my DD. Soooooo tempting.

It's the only Boss I'd get. Unfortunately it's quantities are said to be at 500 per year, so it might be hard to find at MSRP or below.

Yeah, I heard 4000 Boss units per year with 500 of those being Laguna's. There will be the typical dealer rape.

m4a1mustang 01-31-2011 01:16 PM

The Camaro cluster is pretty bad. At least the Premium GT cluster looks pretty decent. After a while you get used to the faces but the Boss and GT500 definitely look better. The good thing about Ford Racing is they are probably going to make the Boss cluster available for sale without a vin number. I could get the GT500 one right now but since it uses the 5.4L the tach is off (and of course there's also that pesky boost gauge that has no relevance... yet).

Red__Zed 01-31-2011 04:20 PM

such a sweet ride.

Nismoracer 02-01-2011 03:20 PM

2 keys? One for reg and one for all out? So do you get 4 keys altogether? Looks like they took a page from personal watercraft. One key to limit its rpms for beginners and one for the one who knows what they are doing. But yeah I think a button or switch would have been better. Normal key probably doesn't restrict it that much. That would be kinda cool. You give the rpm restricted valet key to drop your car off. They won't be able to rag it then.

The Red key is basically a race tune. It changes something like 200 different parameters in the ecu... the car is pretty nasty with the red key. The reason its not a switch is because that would subject it to EPA scrutiny. Its more than just a slight few changes... its quite a huge difference in terms of the performance of the car.

Lemers 02-01-2011 04:44 PM

I think using the regular key on the boss compared with a GT would be like the difference between a nismo and base Z.

Correct, the red key I believe is written in the manual as an 'off-road' feature and does not meet XX standards. Which basically tells you you really need to do nothing with this car if you want to track it.

Lemers 02-01-2011 04:49 PM

So the only time the blue key get used is where you get your yearly inspection or lone it to your son on prom night.

:happydance: YES!!!!!! except more needs to be said for the Nismoness of the nismo

Endgame 02-03-2011 10:53 AM

The Boss is SICK. I like the idea of Z as DD and Boss as track car; good thought.

I can't wait until this comes out and starts racing; can't wait for the model either!!

theDreamer 02-03-2011 10:54 AM

Co-worker (loves mustangs) said someone is complaining on one of his forums that he cannot order the Boss with sync. :rofl2:

Lemers 02-03-2011 11:05 AM

I find it strange that ford limited the option of the synch when it really doesnt effect the rest of production on the car.

I think they chose to leave it out because the car is not intended as a "daily driver." If you are really concerned about having Sync you are better off with a Premium GT over a Boss.

flashburn 02-03-2011 11:28 AM

This car was built focused as a track car. Adding sync would do nothing but bloat the price (and perhaps the weight?). I love what they did with this car. They took the normal GT, and beat the snot out of it for a year on various tracks, and basically told the engineers everything they needed to "fix" in order for it to be highly competitive on the track.

:iagree: that breed of stang is up there.

Lemers 02-03-2011 01:31 PM

Just saying that if I was in the market for the boss I'd want the synch. It's not that much heavier than the regular radio that goes in it.

I think their targeted demographic would chastise them for including Sync in it. I could maybe see it in the regular Boss, but definitely not in the LS. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if some people were upset that it has speakers and a head unit in it, :rofl2:.

:bowrofl:

I agree. I love the Boss, but I'd never use it as a daily driver. It'd be a weekend warrior / track queen only. Plus you don't need no stinkin' stereo when you've got side-pipe cutouts.

Lemers 02-03-2011 02:09 PM

I just can't spend that much money on a car and not drive it every day. And I would use the red key on the road.

Just don't use the red key when you take it in for an emissions inspection. :icon17:
