G37 vs Genesis Coupe [Re-Post?]

I saw a Hyundai Genesis Coupe on the road the other day and it got me thinking about how similar the design felt. Like I had seen the car somewhere before but in a different color, or body kit... whatever it was, the overall design of the vehicle just gave me a haunting chill. It wasn't until tonight did I start wondering if it was possible for a car company to sue another if there was proper evidence they stole a design of one of their flagship vehicles because I've discovered how hauntingly similar the G37 Coupe and the Genesis Coupe look...

Comparison 1: In these two pictures the two car's headlights are slightly different in design but close enough to see the connection. Even the front grilles are shaped in the same way, a bit of a curved rectangle positioned with the headlights almost identically. However, as you travel down the front fascia you can see a bit of a difference, the G37 has 3 separate segments, whereas the Genesis has one large blackened section. However, at a single glance the two cars are similar enough in the front end to be quite noticeable.

Take a look at the side of the car in these two shots as well. The two sides of the cars are nearly identical. The only real noticeable difference is the Genesis is a bit more "cut" into design wise but you can see the obvious similarities.

Comparison 2: In this comparison shot you can see the striking similarities between the taillight design and the way there's a sloping arc just above the taillights. You can even see the rear valences are shaped similarly, as well as the actual trunk itself on the Genesis is eerily similar to the G37.

No you may be saying that since they're both coupe styled cars that they're going to look quite similar due to the nature of it. Also the regulations and laws that both cars adhere to will also force them into a similar body shape. However, you cannot argue how obviously similar these two vehicles are and honestly makes me wonder which design came first. To me it seems like Hyundai was dead set on taking one of the most popular Japanese sedans and putting enough spin on it to reproduce a car that would most likely become their "sporty staple." Maybe I'm over analyzing the situation but honestly all this proves to me is the laziness of Hyundai.

The history of the car is full of competing cars that look similar in design. Although these two car are simular, China has been known to make almost exact copies of non Chinese cars.

The interior looks similar too haha. To me, it seemed like a cheaper copy of the G37 when it first came out.

I also noticed the forte coupe is a copy of the civic coupe.

The Genesis Coupe is a Korean car, not Chinese! ;)

Every car company takes design cues from other unless they patent them I think.

Take the LED craze now. everyone is doing it. Not sure if Audi was the first to do it in a production car though.

I know it's Korean. I lived in Korea for a year. The point I was making with that statement is that the Chinese are even more deliberate in copying other cars. It's mainly due to their all but closed market.

The Koreans also try to close their market with very high import taxes, this let's them get away with similar cars from other markets.

Let's all remember that the car market is global and these companies make choices based on a global profit not just a local one.

theres a pic out there with a white g37 and a white genesis nose to nose...At first glance they look almost exactly alike. It takes actually being a car enthusiast to have noticed the differences...or just look at them long enough.

On the road they look completely different though.

one could say that about a lot of cars though *shrug*

Really I don't think anyone on this forum is going to mistake a genesis for a g coupe anytime soon.

I have a friend with a Gen Coupe and a friend with the G37... I gotta say the Gen feels more sporty, the G feels more luxury-coupish.

I don't see the similarities. The only similarity I see is in the overall shape of the car. Plus these two cars came out less than a year apart. It would be too hard to mimic a design and put it into production in that short of a time span.

Pretty much ALL Hyudai's steal design cues from other manufacturers. It's the one thing that really bothers me about this company. It's not like they try to hide it. A Genesis sedan was paked outside my sisters office in North Carolina and a lot of people thought it was a Bentley. The Bentley like badge could fool anyone at first glance.
