Default Question on snow driving

I'm going to be borrowing the family BMW X6(AWD) for a trip to Mammoth Mountains but the wheels have summer tires installed. Therefore, I'll be bringing along a pair of snow chains but is this setup safe enough before even needing the chains?

Summer tires + snow = bad things.

but then again he has snow chains on.

and the X6 is pretty useless for snow driving, I remember a friend who has one getting stuck at our driveway which was like a inch or two of snow.

it was seriously pathetic.
