Well, the Mustang is a light car for it's size. It's only a couple hundred lbs heavier than a Touring/Sport 370Z.

Compare it to cars in it's class and it's a true lightweight. The Camaro comes in around 3800lbs and the Challenger tips the scales at over 4000.

To put things into perspective, a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano weighs about 3800 lbs!

Oh, granted that the Stang is a notable exception. As is the Z imo.

My problem with larger vehicles is the idea that moar wait = saif tea. While it's true that the bigger car wins in a collision (thank you physics), it is also true that a lighter vehicle tends to be more maneuverable, easier to stop/accelerate, and therefore more likely to avoid the accident in the first place (the part of physics that NHTSA guys skimmed). That's the crux of my usual rant.

That usually entails 2 seat sport cars (Corvette, Z), high dollar sports cars made with exotic materials, or piddly 4 bangers.

continued rant:

Plus the continuous bloating gives diminishing returns. Don't buy a 5-star rated minivan from 1997 and expect it to be safe. If it smacks into the same minivan from 2005, it's the accordion, while the 2005 model which is much heavier survives less scathed.

But this is all drifting off topic.

Truth. Two seaters fall in that low 3k lb zone.

4 seater honda civics are pretty light no? granted they have 4 cyl engines, but an aluminum block V8 shouldnt stack too much more onto the weight right?

Yes they are light, but they are also compact cars, so compared to a Mustang they are tiny.

Like I said before the Mustang is a lightweight compared to cars of its size.

Yes, 400hp to 3600lbs is great power-to-weight ratio. The Challenger is the bloated beast in this segment, although it'll have smokin' power soon enough. I'd probably still prefer a Z or Stang to it.

Although, I love a good light roadster like a Miata or an Elise. Light weight, small 4 banger. It's not a drag strip star, but it'll tear up corners.

And the MS3 is pretty nice for a 4-door grocery hauler. It's a compact, but it's brutal fun.

The downside to the OHC design is the packaging. This is another reason I love the pushrod LS engine. My dad's LS7 was much smaller than my 4.6 mod motor, even though the displacement would lead you to believe otherwise.

The Mustang is definitely really light for its segment, but not the lightest on the road. Early reports say Ford engineers are going with the "less is more" approach with the next gen. Mustang to lower the weight.

The 11' Mustang GT is roughly the same weight / power as the E92 M3. I think I would still rather have the M3 though regardless of cost. I've read that the next Z will have an upgraded limited slip (apparently the current one is basically crap) come stock with oil cooler and possibly a new motor supplied by Mercedes. Supposedly it will have a lot more torque and be more refined vs. the max-out /trashy VQ.
