Japan's Nikkei ends morning session up 1.3%
Nissan may relax Japan production cutbacks
By V. Phani Kumar, MarketWatch
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) --
Japan's Nissan Motor Co. plans to relax its production cutbacks starting next month as the automaker has reduced its inventories after lowering output in the first two months of the year, according to a published report.
Nissan's global inventory was expected to drop to slightly above 500,000 units by the end of February after production was lowered more than the decline in sales in the first two months of this year, the Nikkei reported.
"From April, we will be able to return to output levels appropriate to sales volumes," a Nissan official said, according to the report.
Nissan's Tochigi and Kyushu plants in Japan will be closed for six or seven days in March, roughly half the days the plants were shut in February. Production at the Oppama plant, where Nissan produces subcompact cars, is expected to return nearly to full capacity.
Nissan shares rose 3.3% in Tokyo morning session.
