I know it's a concept car, but the ft-86's design reminds me of the Z. I've also heard it will be in the $23,000 range (probably a 4 cyl. though).

Toyota FT-86/FR-S
I know it's a concept car, but the ft-86's design reminds me of the Z. I've also heard it will be in the $23,000 range (probably a 4 cyl. though). I hope Toyota keeps the design and doesn't make drastic production changes like the Honda CR-Z. Won't be available until 2013, but if it has a v6, count me in!

There's a lot of interest in this car. Lightweight, boxer motor, designed to handle and brake well (and according to the chief engineers for the project, to drift -- not that I care about that) and at a budget -- well, originally. Looks liek the production model will cost closer to 30K than 20K.
I agree, it looks a LOT like a mini-Zed. Toyota has confirmed that they are seriously considering a turbo version (search for FT-86 G-sport concept). It should be a pretty bad *** little car, especially if they offer a boosted version. This is the only other car I am interested in, and while we're on the subject, part of what made me decide to jump on the Z was that a rumor was floating around that the FT-86 production model was going to be delayed another two years.. supposedly that has been disconfirmed.

I'm interested in this as well as the future G25 as a replacement for my current Mazda3 DD. I'm looking for something light and easy to drive with decent looks and a little pep. Not really looking for the same sort of performance I get with my Z

I don't think the car looks that bad!
My first new car was a 1986 Toyota Corolla SR-5, so I might be bias. BTW, this is like the 3rd Thread about the FT-86

Actually, yeah. The roof line and front fender are much closer to the GT-R. Well spotted. Hadn't noticed that before.
No offical name yet, but other than FR-S or just "86", Toyota has said they are considering "Celica". That would definitely fit.

I'll take the subaru version over the toyota version. Search for info on it and you'll see it's a much better car, at least in concept form. The talk was that toyota would get the n/a 4cyl RWD while subaru got the turbo charged AWD version. Subaru was saying the power would be around 330 with a price of about 30k, basically right bellow the STI 4 door price. Also the subaru concept looked far more aggressive.

Here are some photos that do the FT-86 better justice. I actually think it looks better than the Z and if it resembles anything it would be a GTR but smaller obviously. I like how it doesn't so much flaunt "hey look at me I'm fast!!" but instead it’s a bit understated. If it ends up driving as good as it looks this might be my next ride. It sounds like there will be a 4cyl NA entry level model with 150+hp that will start at ~ 23k and a Turbo 4 or NA 6cyl with 250+hp that will start at around 27-28k+. That doesn’t sound like a lot of power but at the right weight it should be more than adequate. It might not end up being all that quick but test track numbers are only part of the equation. Look at the Mazda Miata, slow as balls but really fun to drive.

I'm torn on the looks -- I love them both.
Although, I do like the more compact dimensions and lighter weight of the FT-86... If the production model looks that good, and they offer a version that is close in performance to the Z, that will be my next car.
