grad gift

I'm thinking about buying a versa as a grad gift for my 18yo son. He is driving a pos 87 tempo now. Does anyone own one of these or have a friend or relative with one. I'm thinking it would be cheap transportation for college. Should be able to pick one up for 10600 before TTT etc.

cptspeed 05-10-2010 10:29 PM

forgot to mention he will help pay for this vehicle!

Push370zzz 05-11-2010 12:15 PM

Poor kid! Haha...I'd go for a Civic or Altima IMO. More expensive but a lot better vehicle...

vipor 05-11-2010 12:45 PM

Hiro Nakamura loved his Nissan Versa!

Altima IMHO though

Jeffblue 05-11-2010 12:59 PM

yea try and get a used altima coupe or something

m4a1mustang 05-11-2010 01:08 PM

The new Sentras aren't bad, either. See what kind of deal you could get on those. I think a Versa would be a painful every day car.

CrownR426 05-11-2010 01:11 PM

get him a used 03 350z.
That'll run under 10k!
let the boy have some fun!

he's 18, he'll wrap it around a tree in no time. get him a civic coupe or altima coupe. they look sporty and cool. a versa is too much on the economy side of the scale. also won't help in picking up girls

CBRich 05-11-2010 01:26 PM

Honda Fit All Day.

:iagree: really fun to drive imo

Jeffblue 05-11-2010 01:48 PM

yea used Z!

shabarivas 05-11-2010 01:50 PM

fit > versa - old Z > all other choices

Viera 05-11-2010 01:57 PM

+1 for the Fit. They look a thousand times better than the Versa.

NYBladeZ 05-11-2010 02:13 PM

If he is going to pay for it wouldn't you want him to pick? Not that I'm nearly old enough to have a qualified opinion but I'm thankful for my parents practice. If you do well you'll get what's coming to you. My Z was a celebratory gift for getting into law school/wedding gift.

cptspeed 05-11-2010 03:02 PM

Damn. Didn't expect these responces. I won't buy used and honda is not offering any discounts. Thanks for the honest opinions.

kenchan 05-18-2010 04:29 PM

when i graduated college (long time ago), i bought my own car. that's how it was long time ago...

u could always buy him his own 370z

I agree with the Sentra. Not sure what the price range is on the sporty Sentra, but it got a good review from a member here on the boards as his daily driver.

Ninja edit: They appear to be a bit more expensive than the Versa.

A good idea would be to let us know what the price range is. Go with the competition and buy a Gen Coupe? :P

CBRich 05-20-2010 07:44 AM

Whatever you pay extra for the Honda Fit you will more than get back in resale when you go to get rid of it. It is the class leader for a reason.

tinysumo 05-20-2010 05:14 PM

I dunno about you guys but I've always been a fan of the Toyota Yaris hatch coupe. Not exactly the most manly car but I like it for some reason. IMO Yaris>Fit>Versa haha. Plus Toyota's got good incentives goin on....

My parents got me a Scion tC for graduation. Those are pretty cool. :)

SMcK23 05-20-2010 06:37 PM

He could wrap any car around a tree...teach him responsibility and get him a car he likes and you guys can afford!

Red370 05-20-2010 07:00 PM

No to the versa and no to the sentra, yes to the Cube, F'in love it and its cheap.

Car's don't determine your gender. x) Sorry.

alvinmathew88 05-20-2010 11:09 PM

When i graduated, i was given the option of buying a new car under $18k of my choice or wait it out until the end of college and have any car under $35k.

Whatever you do avoid CVT, my sis has an Altima. Altima with a CVT is crap. Id say a Civic (because they are economical and last a really long time like mine, 225,000 miles and still going) or Honda Fit (they are really zippy little cars!). Id get an altima only if its a manual. Personally i wouldnt be caught dead in Versa, maybe a sentra.

Matt 05-20-2010 11:15 PM

I enjoyed the CVT in a 2010 Altima coupe I got to drive for a week or so. Not sure why people dislike it so much.

And sorry Red, that Cube is fugly. :roflpuke2:

Honda fit over anything else. That thing is such an awesome little car. Your son will actually make that extra 2k you spent on it owning the fit for a few years. You will not regret it.
