So Nissans solution to near bankruptcy is GO UPMARKET!

Geez... if Nissan hasnt been on a loser fest since 2010. Cancelling manual transmissions, overdosing with CVT's. Not giving cars like the juke and Sentra DCT's. Abandoning the 188hp turbo 2.0ltr for a 115hp, 1.3ltr. Not going AWD on the maxima, not giving the maxima a JATCO, not keeping the pathfinder competitive with off road vehicles, Not making the leaf a little more premium and larger, not making a hot hatch instead of the versa. Not making Nismo a more serious performance moniker. None of what I mentioned is the problem according to Nissan. The problem is Nissan cars need to be more expensive. Right now a lot of people are looking at the corvette and saying. If I can get that much performance for $60k. I deserve a lot more than 86 power at 30k. At this point, an 86 need to be a $22k car and a Nismo Z should be 35k considering you can get double the performance at 60k. Going upmarket will only kill Nissan. Maybe that's what it deserves with so many bad business mistakes over the past decade. For whatever reason. Which I think it was the ease of getting a Nissan Corp loan. Nissan was flourishing. But as the brand's designs became more hum drum, power reduced and their crossovers have less standard features than the competition. I think that they began to lose... Unlike jalopnik. I think it's a good idea Nissan keeps making sedans. But they need to drop CVT's, add AWD options, and need not so conservative designs. Without going upmarket. They need to do a Kia... cuz right now, the only companies worse than Nissan, are Chrysler and Mitsubishi.

I don't think cancelling manual transmissions has much to do with it. Realistically only the Z warrants a manual in their lineup. The CVT's are likely a bland experience though.
But overall I'd agree that Nissan didn't really make the same push that competitors did. If anything, they seem to have been lost in that same forgettable abyss as American sedans. |
