Nice review. Given the specs a decent track machine not just focused on speed but all around performance as predicted by the press reports on the pre-production testing allowed press drivers in Europe. A nice balanced car. So what is not to like about this machine lol??? Nothing. It does the job and well from what it appears.

I would hope the Supra gets a turbo or 2 like most BMW's. Maybe in a couple years?

Get the HP up to 450 area and it would be respectable, I think.

Prob bump the price up to $70K mark, damn it.
It comes turbo from Toyota.

Grossly UNDERRATED horsepower coming out the Supra. It dynoed 339hp 421ft lbs tq at the wheels. That explains why people are bucking around in the Supra like in my camaro. This is how a sports car should feel. TORQUEY! At this time .. My only complai t is the interior isn't original and that it doesn't have a manual handbrake. But the car itself seems rather impressive. Seems like it has almost everything a "TRUE ENTHUSIAST" needs .. Let me reiterate true. In other words, if you talk about creature comforts, tech, gas mileage and anything outside of tuning performance, and getting the most out of your drive. Youre not a true enthusiast

Like every other car this car is about $3,000 overpriced. But this is the norm in the car market. The Supra seems to be everything I hoped the Z to be. My only performance complaint aside from it being too front heavy was it was low on torque. My gut tells me Toyota was on our forum listening while nissan was on Tesla's forum trying to reinvent themselves. Hopefully, Nissan will wake up from their sleep.

I am thinking that the new Supra does have the same HP as the new 385hp bmw z4. I am hoping Toyota comes out with a manual in the next 2 years as this is going to be my next car.

Comparing it to the 370, on paper and in all actuality it seems like the Z is going to feel like an s2k (just not as gutless) and the Supra will feel like a 03-04 DE Z. Just turbo. And modern lol.

From what I read on the Supra forum Toyota was given a slightly different motor than the Z4. They may have also been restricted by BMW in the hp it could make. So, they tuned it to have an *** load of torque (damn near 500 crank). My initial thoughts are that it's a chicken **** move that it's so underrated, but now I'm glad lol. FBO ought to be a blast, enough power for most, and well worth the money. $50k is about right, but if prices drop below $45,000 it will sway many.

Seems like a good buy, but if I had a Z I wouldn't get ride of it for a Supra unless I had to (and was over the Z). If you like the Supra, keep the Z as you will likely miss it and the two are very different.

Engineering Explained compares the Supra to 86 TRD.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJQo0tZ5Jmg

He's not saying bad things about the Supra, but it is an honest comparison to a known quantity.

Spoiler - he says the 86 is more fun, although the Supra is the better performer.

Dollar for dollar - hmmmm.

I don't think so. The z4 is probably overrated as well.if you notice? The BMW has higher hp and lower tq numbers. And the Supra has lower hp n higher tq numbers. Its just a result of the tune. Engines can be tuned to balance tq n hp or raise hp n tq lowers or lower hp n get more tq. You saw this in the Z33 from 2003 to 2008. The car started with a close ratio of hp n tq. Like 287hp 274 tq. By 2008 it waa 306hp and 268lb tq. The engine was maxed out so getting up was draining tq numbers. They had to bore it out to get more power. In the case of the Supra. I don't think it's maxed out in the same way per say. But it's maxed out without certain types of mods. So getting more power is going to take doing all the things Toyota left room for. Opening vents new coolers and going thru the stage tunes and there associated parts.

What he's honestly saying that he's scared to drive any real high powered sports car the way he should. Cuz he's so on point about not crashing he's not having fun. His opinion of his liking is based on his lack of driving confidence in machines with small windows like the Supra, Z camaro and other sports cars that are brolic with slit style windows. He's honest about his skill level more than anything.

I think that what he's saying is that potential buyers should really look at what they want to do with the car and consider the value of the (known quantity) 86 as a benchmark. Especially given the price difference. No doubt they are two quite different vehicles.

The Supra may well be a far better car than he is a driver - that's not a bad thing, if you want to dedicate yourself to improving on the track. But it almost takes a racetrack to get the goodies out of something like the Supra. Not quite on a par with Porsche or supercars, but a more serious entry than the 86 which is just a blast to drive anywhere, period. The lesser Toyota can be driven at the limit in most situations, and therefore needs some major mods to satisfy a serious track driver as skill levels progress. The Supra is more capable, but on the street will be less fun.

I'm not trying to diminish the Supra in any way, but since 99.9% of people who buy either car will not ever even drive it past the gate of a race track, I think it is a fair comment and a comparison that needed to be made.

And if you look at Jason's other video's, he's definitely under-stating his own driving skills. He's done a lot of track driving with competent instruction, including the Porsche Winter Driving Experience. He's just not the type to go out and flog a car every weekend chasing tenths like some of us. He also hasn't learned many bad habits.

At first, by the title, I thought that it was going to just be click-bait. But after watching the video, I think it made sense.

Honestly... I've driven the 86. It's a Honda vtec that spins the wheels in the back. That's the best way to describe. I mean. All of us being in Z's or better. I couldn't make this case. From where I see on paper. The Supra is comparable to a Camaro but in a Z size. That's what I'm talking about. So many years people done whined about wanting a 400hp Z and more torque. By some miracle of the car gods the most boring car company of the last 17 year's gets a fun transplant and he's making a case why it's more fun to be in a RWD Toyota civic. I'm just not in agreement with the fun factor of the 86. It doesn't rev high like the S2k. It doesn't have power like the Z and you have to pay mid 30s for a car with 205hp w/ track bits. I mean if you wanna low hp car that's meaningful? The s2k would've been it. Does that mean the 86 is a bad car? Not at all. Its just, none of us here should be looking at a starter sports car. We're past that point. Some will argue balance. Well then I'd say get a Cayman or a 4C. The 86 is something I'd buy if I had an 18 yr old son that needed to learn driving dynamics. And Porsches have big ole sedan windows that novice drivers will love. Me... I'm confident driving out of slit windows. Not a problem. So I wouldn't whine about visibility on track .

Spoken like a true American. :-P
Forget the windows. How many posts here are "if it only had a manual"? The 86 does. The Supra . . . might.

And forget the horsepower. Supra has the exact same horsepower per ton that the 370Z has. The reason to go to the new Toyota is the torque provided by the turbo motor. That's a fact.

BTW, the S2K is boring as hell to drive unless you rev it above 7K. That gets really old after a while on the street. Your neighbours won't love you, but you'll enjoy tinnitus for the rest of your life!

Most people (myself included) don't know how to handle a car well enough on track for the first several years anyway, and giving them all that HP is doing them a disservice. Putting them in a 400HP rocket usually only masks their mistakes. Giving it to them for the street - can you say "Mustang"?

Anyway, if this chart displays properly, then the only thing you need to figure in is the fun factor, which is too subjective to measure and will be different for everyone here...

EDIT - sorry - don't know how to make the chart appear larger. :-(

I have tinnitus thanks to chemo n a S2K. Lol. Not the S2k. I mean you say that gets really old but. Most people with 2 seater sports cars have something else to drive. And the supra does not compare to a Z. Did you not see the dyno specs? From a dunk there's nearly 100hp difference. Which explains the half second faster it is. The Z is a dinosaur by comparison. This car is laying down the same times as my camaro.

Like I said... Were in a Z forum. Did u own a Z? Did you track it? If you did 300hp at the wheels? Then u can graduate to 400? But anyway. To each his own.

370 = Hanz
Supra = Franz

86= needs to get pumped up!!
