The GR86 threatens the 2.0 Supra for sure, but that car was always a dubious production choice IMO. A 2.0 4 banger just doesn’t fit the Supra legacy, just as it wouldn’t fit the Z legacy.

I think the 3.0 Supra and new Z, however, are safe enough from the GR86. They are both 400-ish HP 6 banger coupes that compete in a slightly different market to the ‘low power, low weight, low cost’ GR86, BRZ and MX-5.

Drive a BRZ and then the Supra 2.0 I had both. I kept the Supra 2.0

That's fine, you kept the car that suited your particular preferences. Not everyone will make the same choice depending on their own preferences and priorities.

My point was that the 3.0 Supra is in another league entirely (both performance but also price wise) to the GR86, so the other poster's point about the GR86 threatening the 3.0 was off base.

The 2.0 Supra, although still in a different price segment, is a far closer match to the GR86 in terms of performance, and is closer in price, so if the GR86 presents any threat to any Supra, it will be to the 2.0.

In truth though they probably do attract different buyers. The GR86 is cheap, lightweight, and feels it (I owned a MkI for 5 years so I know how tinny and cheap they felt inside). The Supra is more expensive, heavier, and much more premium (pairing with BMW does pay dividends for interior refinement). Which a person prefers is going to be very personal (and also based on financial situation).

As an aside, I'll always have to wonder what the 2.0 Supra is like to drive, because it never came to Australia. Toyota made the decision to only bring the 3.0 Supra here (and made it a AUD100K car so they are rare as hen's teeth hereabouts). My big fear is that Nissan will price match the Supra, putting the new Z out of reach of many local enthusiasts (me included).

dubious production choice

Per the Nissan Prod Development woman in the latest video posted in the "400z" section, the new Z will start around 30k$ for the base model... 400hp/350tq 6 speed standard.
At that price, F the Stupra!!

I could be dead wrong, but I believe the Z starting at $30k for the base model is exactly that...the base model. Yes, it will come with the 400hp, 350tq, and 6spmt, but I HIGHLY doubt it will come with the LSD, the upgraded brakes/tires, interior/exterior options, and some other stuff. In this regard, Nissan is doing a really good job of false advertisement because they have been talking about the power specs and the starting price, but that yellow Z everyone is seeing in the press media aint it. Again, I could be wrong, but this is just my analysis. Personally, if I'm buying a car, I'm going to get exactly what I want with the bells and whistles. However, you can't deny cost of entry for such a car as it's still a great bargain. I don't care what anyone says, but apart from the exterior styling, it's a total parts-bin car and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm amazed it starts at $30k considering what the 370 went for and what the q60 are selling for. It's almost head scratching.
I think the Supra had a really rough start for so many reasons we have already beaten to death here. However, with the introduction of manual I think it's a fair contender now. You can't even say one is N/A and the other is boosted anymore. Both are, or should be, reliable. I think it'll just come down to styling preference and whichever one you think drives better, all subjective. I don't really care about #s in terms of how fast it is or whatever, but it would still be interesting how they perform on the track considering how close these cars stack up to each other. I've decided to keep my 370Z rather than waiting for the new Z because I prefer N/A, but if something were to happen to it, I'd gladly pick up a new Z or a 6cl supra.

All that being said, we all damn well know that no dealership is going to to be selling this car for MSRP, especially now!
I have to rant about this even though it's totally unrelated to this thread, but I used to despise the dealers that sold for MSRP aka no haggle. After dealing with so many shitty car salespeople, I think I can honestly say I support the no haggle business method. I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but I think car salesmen are useless now. If anything, they just give a terrible experience. The sales managers are the final say anyways. The salespeople are just mediators. I can now see why Carmax and online car dealers are flourishing. We are in a time where car salesmen don't even need to anything to sell cars. Rant over.

There is no way a new Z is starting at or below the same price as the outgoing Z period. False news, someone is smoking crack!!!

Well isn't the new Z, exactly a Z34, only difference is with an updated dash, body, wheels, motor and trans. Everything else is a 370Z correct?

Regardless, inflation, the cost of the updated tech and the chips to brain them. Nothing is the same since the stopped the production of the Z.
