Default WRX or EVO

Girlfriend is looking at getting a 2010 WRX or EVO. Obviously they are seperated by performance but also price. She isn't a fan of the STI. Performance is important but so are looks and she just isn't digging the wagon. Anyway, I've previously owned a WRX so I'm very familiar with subaru's. I have virtually not experience with EVO's or mitsubishi. Just wondering if the EVO is as reliable. Price for both is 500 over invoice and she likes both cars; leaning more towards the EVO due to more aggressive looks and faster. Since I don't know a lot about EVO's I want to be as informed as possible before she drops 35k on one. I've read up on some forums but most are littered with posts about mods and hp, very little on the substance of the car itself. The car will be a DD with occasional auto-x and drag. Light mods like exhuast, ECU, intake only, if at all. Just wanted to see everyone's opinion.

before people ask or recommend other cars she is currently coming from an 06 Vette. She also has a 2000 T/A V8. Problem is she wants to downsize into one car instead of two but also needs room for her 80lbs dog (currently fits in the back seat of the T/A). She would love to just keep the Vette but it just doesn't fit the dog. We've already went and test drove a bunch of cars and crunched the numbers and it basically comes down to these two cars. Thanks everyone

I am semi in the market for these cars, so let me spill some of my research over here.

First of all, Evo vs. STi is all preference. While they are very different cars they perform in a similar fashion -- in pretty much all aspects. This includes straight performance/handling but also reliability as well. There was a significant issue with the 08-09 STI's that was causing a lot of engines to go on stock cars. This issue was confined to cars produced before September of 08 though, so a 2010 will be fine. X's had a tune problem very early on but this was recalled, reflashed and fixed.

Outside of those small issues I haven't heard of many complaints for either car.

To be very honest with you I flip-flopped between both for a long time, pretty much changing my opinion with the winds. It really comes down to things like what interior/exterior she likes better (I prefer the Evo exterior but STi interior), which sound she likes better (the generic evo sound vs. the boxer growl) and all of those tiny little things that make a car unique.

Also, both of these cars respond insanely well to light modding and can be very fun and very unique without a whole lot of money or time invested.

I'm assuming you know the forums, but in case anyone else has the same questions/wants to do some research:

Subaru:
IWSTI.com: Subaru WRX STI Forums
North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club

Evo:
EvoXForums.com
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution | Reviews, News, Parts, Owners - EvolutionM.net

edit:

also, this kid has done a **** ton of modding to his car but I love it so much (and how it sounds) that it still keeps me thinking about the current gen STi

Evo is a couple hundred pounds heavier if that matters.

Personally, I like the looks of the evo better.

Much as I like the STI, most of the reviews have given the nod to the EVO MR. She might also appreciate the auto capability of the paddle shift.

The only major downside to the Evo is the econobox interior, which is just way under par for such an expensive car (not that the STI is much better).

I think he is asking about the WRX only and not STI version..that being the case I think the WRX is more practical maybe a little quicker if your talking about an EVO MR..and cost wayy less..so a better value.

I would say the Evo is the way to go if you want to have more aftermarket support and make more power easily. If she wants a daily driver car get the STI I hear it's slightly better for everyday commute. Both cars are great I personally like the Evo being a previous owner. I had an modded 04 Gsr and I daily drive it at 22psi all the time and drove it hard occassionally. It never gave me any problems only when I start messing with the engine, but that's how you learn about the car. I'm not sure if this will help you at all.

Yup, WRX only. She doesn't like the wagon style of the STI. Same reason I didn't get an STI back when I was looking for a car.

As for the other comment, we aren't too worried about who is faster. Obviously the EVO is the faster car. Just wondering about the reliability of the EVO as well as if it's woth the extra 7k over the WRX for the performance. I mean she is coming from an LS2 corvette so if speed were the #1 factor she would just stay with that.

I would go with the evo. But either car is fast, but something about the evo I like more than the wrx.

The WRX honestly isn't even comparable to the Evo as far as performance. The STi is, but not the standard WRX.

Honestly I think it comes down to your budget. The Evo is going to outperform the WRX in every way, but the price tag is higher. Both cars are nice, just depends on your budget.

Did not even cross my mind until you said that.
