Car Head to Head to Head Thread!
Hey guys been a while!
So cars been paid off for about a year now since I purchased it (Yay!) I've gotten some moola I can spend on a new vehicle soon. And wanted some opinions! Ive been really looking hard at the 2018 Stingray z51 3LT 2018 718 Cayman Base or Wait to see what the new Supra has to offer! Thoughts? Opinions?

I'd go with the Vette over most sub-$100k new sports cars these days.

Yea, after doing some evening reading while the melatonin kicks in.
The vette keeps me awake! But something about the shape of the porsche just makes me have wet dream here or ther.e And then there is the Supra. Boy that original rendering made me wanna play the lottery.

Yeah, and there's no sign of an actual car anytime soon.
The Porsche is nice, but the base model is underwhelming, yet still costs the same hilarious amount for parts and service as all the other Porsche lineup. The best call would be a 2017 Vette, since most owners baby them and they still depreciate like a Chevy.

Pre-718 Cayman.
Flat 6 or bust. You can probably get a good 2015 or 2016 GTS or at least an S, for the same price as a new 4-cylinder base. The new Vette is finally the real deal. But it's still only GM quality. Someone I know had a 2014 and said that the finish looked like someone had spray-painted a pizza! And they drop in value like a stone. The flip side is that you can get it fixed anywhere, for GM shop rates. Porsche oil changes involve lubing more than just the car. Definitely go into that purchase with your eyes wide open (or they will be wide open the first time you have to pay Porsche tax for regular service!!!). Forget the Supra, unless your time horizon is 2020. What do you want out of the car? Touring? Daily? Just a toy? Track days? Porsche consumables are spendy. There are some other really good cars out there (Camaro and Mustang are worth thinking about if daily driving is a consideration). The higher-performing variants of the Dodge twins if you walk up to them blindfolded in the morning. If you want sheer fun and totally impractical, I'll still tell you to test drive a 4C and an Evora 400. Last edited by ZCanadian; 03-28-2018 at 11:13 AM. |

I'm thinking if the paint job was really an issue for 2014, by the 2017/18 iteration, it would not be a problem anymore. Hopefully. I'm test driving all three in the last week of April as my birthday is during that week. So lets see how it goes! But yea the Porsche, I hear so many things in regarding to maintenance, but I'm thinking it will probably fall somewhere close to any other comparable job at a decent shop. Is what I'm thinking

Porsche service - add a zero to the number you think something should cost.

Definitely test drive a bunch - even if they are really on the outskirts of what you have in mind. You only get to car shop every so often, so make the most of the process. You may find the perfect car is one that you hadn't even originally considered.
As for the Vette paint, check them out carefully. Yes, they should have fixed it in 3 years, but they had 50 or so to get it right already! ;-) I edited my earlier post - you might not have seen, but I added some other thoughts. Keep in mind, the outside appearance is the smallest part of the equation. You are inside the car more than out. And performance has to factor in. Mostly, the car has to do what you want it to (a practical daily, or comfy on long trips, perhaps carry some groceries, or be good at the track, or cheap to operate, whatever). Just try them all and go for the one that puts the biggest smile on your face! |

Ahh yea saw it just now,
Its gonna be my daily driver for sure. And the interior on the porsche is my biggest caveat i have with it. I was also REALLY considering the mustang 350gt. but again the interior kinda turned me off to it. The stingray interior makes me feel like i REALLY wanna be in it, as to why im always leaning more towards that car as oppose to the others. On the 4C note, was looking at it, but meh, imo not enough power for me atm. I will def look into consumables for porsche, im hearing alot on lube. Which would def add another cost. Ill take a look!

Keep in mind, power only matters at high speed (and in arguments with ricers). It's power-to-weight, and torque that you live with at any other time. Take a look at the performance summary comparison charts of 4 cars at this link (yes, I added the 4C, partly because I'm such a fanboy but also to help demonstrate that power isn't everything, LOL)... http://www.zeperfs.com/en/match4701-6386-4686-4693.htm It shows you just how good the Vette is (and how useless the 370Z Nismo is, by comparison, although it's really out of its league against these cars anyway). Ignore the "price to performance" index at the bottom of that page - this is a European site, and the Vette is outlandishly priced outside of North America. Have fun! |
