Polaris Slingshot

I remember when the slingshot first came out and it definitely caught my eye, but as soon as I heard the engine was from Pontiac and the the transmission was from Saturn I was turned off. It looked pretty cool, at least to me, but it became an after thought fairly quickly. I'm in the market for a weekend car and the Nismo is probably my favorite sports car of all time. I'm just trying to wait it out to hear the final word regarding the z35 (and even then I'd probably still choose the z34). Anyways, the reason why I'm bringing this up is because I recently heard the Slingshot had to be recalled yet again (if you're not aware, the slingshot has been recalled several times - I never really cared to read about them).

I'm just wondering what you guys think of it. It looks like a blast to drive! I'm not sure of reliability, craftsmanship or warranty. I know the looks are love it or hate it and the reviews seems to say it's either great or pointless. Nothing really in the middle. Obviously it doesn't compare to the Nismo, but as a weekend car...opinions?

BTW any other cars I should be thinking about? Please don't give me the mustang, miata, camaro, etc crap...there's a reason why I like the Nismo lol
I do like the Evora a lot, but again, the bang for buck of the Nismo is too good pass up on and there's no way I'm paying 100k for a weekend car.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Interesting styling and all, but, given the number of serious recalls in the Slingshot's short history, I'd pass.

Polaris Slingshot

You'd think based on the looks, the thing would be a sharp handling road rocket. Looks are deceiving when it comes to the Slingshot. It is quite boring to drive and the performance is just not there. It's relatively slow, uncomfortable and has vague steering feel. The interior is all covered in cheap plastic and rubber. It is a dud in my opinion.
Believe it or not, I was actually considering getting one instead of my '16 Nismo. Man am I glad I went for the Z.

I think it'd be cooler with 4 wheels.

The Z is an amazing toy and while not the best at any one thing, the total package is hard to beat for under $100K.

With one tiny exception (literally): The Fiat 500 Abarth.

The Abarth is half the cost, gets twice the gas mileage, weighs 1000 pounds less, and right out of the box is 80% of the 370Z's performance envelope.

And if you drop about $3k in bolt-ons, the Abarth will make north of 220hp, weigh about one ton with the driver in it, will corner with enough force to damage hot asphalt, and sound like it ate a Ferrari 458 for breakfast.... I say this as someone who owns and races a '13 Abarth with about $3K in bolt-ons. :driving:

There are some down-sides though: the Abarth is ugly as sin compared to the 370Z, has the typical Italian long arms - short legs seat position, you sit stupidly high in the car so it feels like you'll flip over all the time, and the car has a 90" wheelbase and is 55" across - so with any kind of sport suspension it's a bit like strapping yourself to a paint mixer.

Overall though, the Abarth is super cheap to feed and a hoot to drive. Taking one for a spin is highly recommended. :D

Most definitely. However, it would be extremely difficult and expensive to sell it as a car. By the time it passed all the regulatory and Highway safety requirements, it would be twice or three times as heavy and double the price. It's unfortunate but that is reality. That's the only reason that Slingshots, T-rex's, etc. exist today. It's a way to get around it. But, having three wheels instead of four is an inherently bad design concept.

You neglected the #1 best thing about the Abarth - the girl in the ads.

Always been a fan of a the x-bow... don't know anything about how it performs, just love the 'pissed-off-cockroach' look.

WOAH! Where did this come from?? It looks very expensive...how much is it? When is it coming out?
Edit: I just did some digging....88k lmao no thanks. Looks bad *** though.

Never understood the appeal of the Polaris Slingshot; all the danger and risk of riding a motorcycling, with none of the performance benefits.

DCNISMO 06-15-2017 11:28 AM

I've seen an X Bow at the track kill other cars, with a good driver it can keep up or easily get by lots of higher priced or modded up cars. It's street legal too.

Wow.... vague steering feel on that type of vehicle = worthless beyond reproach. Dayum!

Wondering what your budget is? The car I was considering getting before I got into a Z or that I wanted to trade my GTI in for (you know...bc YOLO) was the Mini Cooper GP2. The color scheme is great...different shades of gray along with red stitching. Suppose to be a better handling car than the JCW Mini to begin with and more HP - so it might be something to consider. You'll have to buy used since they only came out for 1 year.

Here is one for sale I believe:

Good luck.

It's not so much about budget as it is bang for the buck, and personally I don't think anything comes close to the Z. My brother had a GTI, 335i, then nismo and currently a Golf R. Now he wants to go back to the nismo with me!
Dude...I love that gen of the mini cooper and that specific one looks sweet! Great taste ;) However, 1. When it comes to MT I won't buy used and 2. I still think the nismo looks better :D
Good looks though and I appreciate your input!

Considering the Z is getting long in the tooth, I still think it looks better than 95% of what is out there now; I guess that is why I won't even consider trading my vehicle in unless it's for a lower mileage Z ;)

And the Nismo with those recaros are NOICE!
