Default [Help]Transmission problem?

Hey guys,

So the car in problem is not my Z but my gf's 2004 automatic base RSX. I don't surf any rsx forums and i thought this would be a general questions for mechanic-pros on this forum. Story is below:

Gf took her car out 9:00am in morning. Wet road, sun shine blinded her, she drove onto side walk a little and climbed back down. Continued to drive 2 more blocks car died. I didnt have the time to check it out myself but from what shes saying: "Sounded a little weird, then a little later, can "rev" but car will not move anymore." Bla bla, it got pushed to near by parking lot. BY the time i arrived, never turned the car back on. I saw a puddle from the front of car didnt look like oil, looked thin. Im thinking the side walk curve punctured something. Called a tow guy and he took it to a mechanic at a nearby 76 gas station. Guy there is my grandma's friend. He fixed stuff for me before like o2 sensor but he said transmission is fked and out of his reach. Gotta find a specialist.

My question is, what do you guys think? Ive never had any problems related to engine so i have no idea what to do or where to start. Will be checking and updating for anyone who needs more info.

Thanks for reading guys. Hopefully I can get the car back on road.

Jack it up and look for yourself, sounds a bit far-fetched that driving onto a curb ruined the tranny, line popped out maybe

Do you have pics

Best guess is that when she hit the curb, it jammed the CV axle into the differential and locked up the transmission. If the line was broken (judging by the comment about fluid), and if all the fluid was lost, the trans burned up. Transmissions appear to run from $175 to up to $500+ for used ones, plus about 5-8 hours of labor puts a transmission R&R in the ball park of $1200+. IMHO, time to scrap the car and get a newer one.

Car has like 100k miles on it and still going strong, i think she wants to save it if possible and reasonable price. Where did you find used rsx transmission for that price range? Craigs?

Ebay for the $175 one. I just did a Google search for used 2004 RSX transmissions..

It is possible that a transmission from the same year Honda Civic might fit, and it might be cheaper. I'm sure the salvage yards in Cali are outrageous on prices, but Ebay seems to have a fairly large listing of RSX transmissions with free shipping in the $500 to $800 price range. My 'guess' is that with Cali shop rate being about $125 an hour, to R&R that trans with a used one, is going to be in the ball park of $2k to $2.5k. Good luck.

Pretty much exactly what I got quoted. $2,350 for min and max at $2750. This was a quote for rebuilding the trans. Thanks! If we don't find a good place, we probably will sell it on craigs for as is. Don't know how much we would get out of it though.
