Get the vette. When I was shopping for my Z, I also thought about a C6... The ONLY thing that stopped me from it is that I live in Tampa and everyone seems to have one here and that turns me off.

Something's got to come to the rescue of the US manufacturing sector, so, yes, BUY IT!

UNKNOWN_370 07-22-2016 11:05 AM

You have hydraulic steering in your Z and loads of feedback. You'd be trading it for a numb mobile in terms of steering feel.

It's steamboat long compared to a Z.

No handbrake

That's the best I got.

I was recently in a similar boat as you.

I was looking at the base vette though, not a Z06. Annnnd, I ended up in a Porsche. No regrets.

If your budget is approx 100k and you care about warranty.. check out a 981 GT4 Cayman. Not as fast as a Z06 but an amazing track car and the quality all around is above the Chevy, I would go that option. Or wait for the 718 GTS/GT4.

If you don't care about warranty..
1 - 991 Carrera Turbos can be found about the same price as the Z06 and have equal or better performance
2 - 981 Cayman S or GTS, turbo it for ~$10k (TPC racing) and you'll have 450+ crank hp in a mid engine sub 3000 pound car
3 - 981 Cayman base, drop a Carerra S motor in it (BGB motorsports) for again, over 400 crank hp, but no turbo lag in a mid engine 3000 pound car
4 - base C7 vette, supercharge it

If you are going just for the 'neighbourhood bragging rights and the 'c0(k measuring' campaign then go for it! The Z06 is an awesome vehicle. But price of maintanence and insurance are not cheap. Also, considering stringent speed limits in most of North America, are you really ever going to utilize it to it's full potential? I also had an opportunity to get a Vette before I bought my Z. I opted to go with a Z simply because I preferred the handling and aesthetics of the Z. Good luck with your decision.

Don't want to loosen the string on a bag of worms here but maybe hold off to see if/what the new Z might look like and have under the hood...
... lets not get into the rumours, just a thought

Can I just ask. is the motor stock in the nismo with the turbo? Im thinking of putting one in my 2010 nismo ,but I dont want to do motor work.

I was going to say, get the Z06 until I read, Z in the 6's post.

Your Z will be paid off shortly and save a few bucks. If the new Z underwhelms or takes too long to come out, then you'll even have more $$ saved for the Z06.

As an ex GM tech up to last year I would ask what is most important to you? Being the fastest or being fast enough and reliable. Not sure your history of the z but it's generally a very reliable car as most Asian are. GM can not say the same (trust me I was the guy doing a lot of those recalls). Also while you may be able to afford the z06 and its payments the upkeep for owning one will not be the same. Those tires alone cost a fortune and the rims have a stupid internal design that most shops can not even change the tires on (our dealer couldn't, 3 other designated tire shops couldn't and we had to take it to California wheels who do a lot of specialty wheels, put it in their cage and inflate with about 150 psi to seat the beads, cheatah bead blaster won't work).

Cool car and fast for the money but I would never ever ever own American or German after working in the field. Just my opinion.

Also if you can afford a z06 wouldn't a GTR be in range?

Oh also if you track your car be ready for oil consumption. Already a bulletin posted by GM that oil consumption and oil in the intake is normal for "aggressive driving" and you will need to replace the air filter after such event since it will become oil soaked after sitting and all the oil from the PCV runs down into it, saw it first hand with a new stingray (not the same as the z06 but similar enough that I would not be surprised).

If I did get one I would lease one and turn it back in in 3 years, not finance it. So factory warranty the whole time

barncobob 07-22-2016 03:33 PM

Id be interested in a mid engine vette. if only they go back to roundish taillights, no batwings

That's fine but you still have the hastle of having to take it in often and not sure if the lease will cover the oil, air filter if needing to be done before "schedule" as they classify the maintenance plan for normal driving and not "spirited/track". Also lease doesn't cover the tires so that's still on you. To me it's just more hastle than it's worth but that's me. Also do they even lease the z06? Other final thought you can't mod a leased vehicle and with a 500hp turbo z are you sure you'll be able to live with a factory car for 3 years and not get bit by the mod bug?

Just my thoughts. It is a fast, fun car though.

I'm actually a bit disappointed at the lack of feedback in my Z. It's there, but it's definitely numb on-center, and subtle for the rest of the range.

Admittedly, it's subjective. It could be the immense arm-strength I posses talking ... (LOL).

So, you think you'd rather drive a plastic bodied car vs aluminum/steel? As mentioned above, the insurance will absolutely HAMMER you every month/3 months/6 months, depending on your policy arrangements. Not fun when you're writing out bills. And also as mentioned above, there are articles/ConsumerReports that warn about reliability issues. If these weren't issues, it would certainly be one of the quickest cars out there, except for the GTR and the Tesla Model S with "Ludicrous" mode. Bottom line, there will always be a faster car out there....
BTW, they've been talking about a mid-engined Vette for several years. Still not here, haven't seen anything about one coming out soon either
