Yes, turbo tunig is cheaper and sometimes easier. And on occasion, dangerous.
Depends on ECU security these days, as to just how stealthy it can be done.
Having another platform sharing the engine, is a plus in that regard.

But it does show that maybe Nissan has been “crazy like a fox” with the 370Z.
When you think about it, front engine 2-seater with rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated 6 putting out 330Hp and available MT6 that is actually pretty readily affordable and pretty fine looking - that is is a combination that is damn hard to find these days. If only it had a better torque number, and maybe some minor tech and interior tweaks over the years...

I think many have been blinded to your words since it seems we all compare the Zs numbers to american cars like the Hemi, GT, or SS.

Hence why I said it’s saving grace is factory fi. But, it will not be cheap to add 200 reliable hp to this bmw engine, this isn’t the ea855 evo 2 in the new rs3/tt rs. 100 to maybe 150 hp easily and safely will be the max.

Ps- fyi jb1/jb4’s are piggybacks that tap into ecu readings and manipulate data, they work well and generally safe if you’re not an idiot but not same as bench flash or custom dyno tuning. BMW ecus are notoriously hard to crack. Since this is a new car, I bet bmw upped their encryption game yet again.

Good points but.... How do we know that the ecu is coming from BMW though. Reports state they will be very different cars. Whose to say the only things in common will be the block and transmission? I say that because as much as I'm not a fan of Toyota products. They don't build ANYTHING unreliable. I would hope they would want to make a great tuner car.

Agreed. But I will have to say with the power plant being a bmw engine then I would assume it would be a bmw ecu. Wouldn’t make sense otherwise. Also could be wrong just my thought on that.

I hope you’re right, I would assume a ‘yota ecu will be easier to crack than a bmw.

My thinking exactly. One ray of hope here is that top gear article said the Toyota folks were really embracing the aftermarket tuners and encouraging them to make parts etc.

My attitude toward this car is evolving. I was pretty meh but after reading that story and seeing the lightly camoed pics, I think this is going to be a good car, but only if it’s not priced over 55k for the top of the line trim. Once you break that mark, only die hard Supra nutswingers would choose this over the alternatives out there. The wild card would be driving dynamics of course. If that is dialed in really well then it could succeed in the market even against “cheaper” powerful options like a Camaro etc

Here's a YouTube commentary on the supra. I found it interesting... It even states that the Toyota engineering guy strongly suggests buying a 4 cylinder and doing a 2jz swap. It's really sad. I don't think the supra will be a bad car. On the contrary. I believe it will be a car that will probably eclipse an M2 in performance. But I don't think it will feel like a supra. I dunno? I have mixed feelings

Oh I also agree that all the current Toyota performance cars are completely unmemorable. This generation belonged to muscle. Nobody built anything that was worth not just buying the hyper capable muscle that recently came out. A 60k zl1 is a gt3 rival and a demon is just ridiculous. Going into a new generation. The supra is not a good start for JDM. The q60 has the. What the supra engine shoulda been. The supra is the chassis the q60 shoulda had. What will the Z be?

New GTR Will probably be too high prices to care for most.

The only thing I got out of that video is the desire to punch the guy in the face.

I am not sure if it is the same engine and transmission, but I thought the smoothness and quickness of the BMW M240i was fantastic. If they put something like that in the Supra I am very interested. A stock turbo Toyota/BMW Z? Yes please!

All i can hope is that Toyota is departing from these current "spindlecoupes" that are dronetastically boring. The design was bold on the first 2 models and then it went throughout the model range. Now toyota is doing a budget interpretation of the spindle. I cringe when I see spindles now.

Every spindlecoupe by Lexus has been outperformed by a midpack muscle car. You gotta really care about luxury to spend another $30k for basically an interior.
When you get up to the LC500. I can give that car a pass cuz it's a luxury car that performs instead of vice versa like the RC lineup.

If Nissan could put the VR30 in a worthy chassis and move to dual clutch? Nissan would easily eclipse Toyota again and with the right weight balance and suspension? Could put themselves in the 1LE performance numbers or possibly beyond with a 60hp deficit. This is the way Nissan did shyt in 2008. But this time. Nissan has the advantage of staying performance competitive against muscle for SEVERAL YEARS if they choose? They gotta evade this EV mindset for a smidge. Geez

This said... If the new mid engined corvette is going to start in the mid 60's as many are speculating with 500hp??? I mean. At that price. The Cayman would be irrelevant and all the competitors will once again struggle??? Chevy will officially reclaim its mid 1960's status as straight legendary. It will be the Corvette and everything else behind it. A GTR would be it's closest competitor. If the GTR will be the 700hp+ beast it's supposed to be? I imagine it will start at double the price of a vette?

Next generation is gonna be crazy. Toyota giving you 382hp for $63,000 in 2020 sounds like a fail. Especially if Nissan comes with a Nismo Z with 500hp in the 60k range which I think will be very possible? But we'll have to see?

All I know is... I'm pretty sure Toyota wrote out a BIG CHECK for this review. The 370z is leagues ahead of an 86. No reviewer will be able to convince me otherwise.
Yes the 370z is a lil more clutsy in mid rotation. That's the ONLY DRAWBACK! Otherwise the 86 is inferior

https://youtu.be/JUhLXvxlQR4

So drive the Supra before depending on upcoming hype.
Toyota has that BMW checkbook to sway minds.

This isn't new, but they are at least running with it until a production car is revealed.
