I dunno. I like it. If Toyota makes that and it is around the same price and performance as the Z, looks like I'll (we'll?) have some serious thinking to do...

Ah geez! Call me old-school but electric motors and regenerative braking? No thanks. I like my sports cars simple and raw. I can accept ABS, traction control (as long as it can be turned off) and maybe a camera. That's it.
PS: The simplicity is what drew me to the Z. |

ABS, "ice mode", yaw control, VDC, electronically controlled fuel injection (and end user tunable!), navigation system (complete with its own ECU), syncro-rev matching and fly-by-wire, VVEL, etc. If you think about it, the Z is anything but a simple car -- except in relation to cars with older tech. Me personally? I would be fine with electric motors (if batteries didn't suck in countless ways). I like the idea of having full torque at 1 RPM, and cleaner air to boot. I think the order of importance for me anyway is this: High performance that is fun to use, reliability so I don't get stranded, and affordable, so I can both enjoy the car and still pay the bills for everything else on time.

I completely agree, and my wishful thinking is that Toyota will do something clever like hook the rear end to the engine with a traditional driveshaft/differential and hook up the electric motors to the front wheel transaxles. This will give you the best of both worlds: immediate torque under the heavy part of the car to eliminate the drawbacks of a traditional sports car (getting traction), but maintaining feel of a sports car in the corners at speed. Oh, then you get all the other benefits of the hybrid, but also the weight. If they do it right, I will be keeping my Z, but getting the Supra as my "practical" car. |

Not that much more to see since they still have those faux panels riveted to the quarter panels, but I am digging the overall shape and size:

![]() I totally agree with this but.... I think the STi already looks dated and it's fvckin new. But I respect the performance.

Oh yes. The steering is what got me hooked when I test drove my '16 Z. I have yet to drive an electric steering car that I like. I think that for now, it is physically impossible for electric steering to feel the same or better than hydraulic.
I just hope that the new Supra will not have steer-by-wire. Now that is a cluster f*ck and more manufacturers are going that route. It's supposed to be the next generation of steering systems that no one wants. |
