![]() I was only trying to deliver accurate information and validate the information I provided regarding the IDx. It wasn't my intention to frustrate or anger you. I know you said to close the thread, but I do appreciate the fact that you took the initiative to create a place to discuss the car. You never know when/if news will pop up on it again. |

Unfortunate. The IDx was really growing on me. I kinda like aggressive boxy look of the Nismo. The compact size might have made it quite nimble.

It does look like someone took a Challenger and scrunched it up a bit.
It's an interesting looking car, but I feel like if/when they put it into production, it will look much more tame/boring/like every other normal car.

i know we agree on a lot.......but i can't give any credit, in any serious way, to an article on a website called 2017 / 2018 Nissan and Infiniti Cars | Changes, Rumors, News, Release Date and Prices
![]() until nissan or someone with a better reputation says something then i will believe it.

Nissan finally made the official statement that they've tried to hash out ways to make an IDX cheaply and can't.
What makes RWD so expensive to design? It makes no sense to me.... Can some of the more technologically intelligent people here explain this to me

To your question though, I've always read the same thing you mentioned: that RWD isn't as affordable to develop. The popular reasons I've read are assembly costs and the logistics of the drivetrain itself. Apparently FWD cars are easier to assemble in the plant due to being able to drop the engine and transmission in together and it only requiring one angle of access to the car (top or bottom access). RWD cars need these components installed separately and require multiple angles of access to the car (top and bottom access). Supposedly the logistics of tunneling a drivetrain through the car, to the rear, also adds engineering complexities as well as additional parts and cost. I'm in the same boat as you though, I'll readily admit I'm not technologically intelligent with respect to the engineering costs of building a platform, so I'd love if someone here who has a great deal of knowledge could confirm/deny this or add more to the conversation. The other reason I saw tossed around by Pierre was not so much about the raw costs that RWD adds to the platform, but that developing a new platform, whether its FWD or RWD, simply costs a great deal of money. They couldn't justify creating an entirely new platform that would be used for just one car that would sell 50-60k units a year (their estimates). This seems to make sense to me when I think about how much auto manufacturers re-use platforms for their cars. Rarely do they ever have a unique platform for a car (excluding cars like the GTR). I mean, even look at the Alpha platform Camaro--GM didn't invest all that money for just the Camaro, it was borrowed directly from Cadillac and is being used on multiple cars. They asked Pierre about a possible FWD version, and while he didn't rule it out completely, he mentioned that in itself would require an investment to completely change the proportions of the car. |

I think Nissan is making excuses for there lack of competitiveness. I find some bunk to the logic in the fact that creating the tunnel to the drive train creates complexity logic based on the fact that the very first cars were RWD and with technology today, I'm sure we have or can create engineering shortcuts to reduce the cost.
Here's where Toyota/Subaru gets their props. They came together and split the cost to create the FT-86. We are partnered with Renault, Mercedes-Benz.... I'm sure there's something that can be done to make financial sense of a new platform. In the case of the IDX. The powertrain is the in the Juke. Even if the idx was made FWD with a manual button to engage AWD in sport mode and give it the lowest center of gravity possible. That would make a great car. The real dilemma Nissan is facing is that everything they've designed outside of the Z, murano, Titan & GT-R is they've all been paired to a CVT. Now Nissan would have to either create a brand new aggressively tuned automatic transmission to serve these ideas... And that costs money. I wonder how the CVT version of the WRX is doing? I imagine not very well. But then again, making these cars purely as manual will also limit sales. Nissan, Honda, have destroyed performance literally by sticking by CVT technology. I believe Hyundai Kia & Mazda are growing because of their dedication to dual clutch and slush box technology. I believe Nissan has created their own financial setbacks by competing with him drum brands like Toyota & Honda instead of keeping there eyes on the American market like they did in the 90's. If we don't put out some good performance cars? We're screwed. We don't have the press on our pockets like Toyota and Honda. Our cars have to do more than there's for the money. That's why Hyundai Kia market share has grown so much. They know this. We will lose our position ahead of them if we don't wake up?
