For us California folk,
Assembly Bill No. AB-1824 (Section 4) is looking to pass the following for 2019: (4) .. Existing law requires every motor vehicle subject to registration to be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise and prohibits a muffler or exhaust system from being equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device. Existing law further prohibits the modification of an exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner that will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle exceeds existing noise limits. This bill would include, among those conditions that are disqualifying, a violation of the above-described requirements related to mufflers and exhaust systems. There is a petition against this law here: https://www.change.org/p/jay-obernol...-in-california Save your exhaust! ![]() |

That's all already illegal in California.
Looking at the actual full text, it looks like they can't just give you a fix-it ticket anymore. It's not making legal exhausts illegal. Like literally nothing will change for you. Quote:

In Orange County, there are neighborhoods that have signs posted saying no loud vehicles and exhaust, and they will fine you. I believe this is near the Fashion Island in Newport Beach... but there are lot of neighborhoods in So.Cal that are like this with signs posted banning loud vehicles.

You don't get written up here for smog exemption. You either don't get your vehicle registered for failing smog or you pay $3-600 for a "special smog" (IF and only IF you have the special connections for a "special smog"...)

Jesus christ, a $1000 fine?
I wonder what exhaust it is. I believe California uses a specific decibel limitation, it's not up to the officers discretion, and it's not just "anything aftermarket". *edit* Looked it up, it's 95 dBa. Per a Z shootout, here are the levels of a few I found from the 350Z. First number is @ idle, second @ 3K rpm, tested at 20 feet back. California tests at 50 feet back. OEM: 81db / 89db Borla: 88db / 92db NISMO: 84db / 95db Stillen: 84db / 93db Injen: 83 db/ 99db 5Zigen: 87db / 105db They should absolutely fight that if they aren't running test pipes or something. *double edit* He's running a Tomei and probably a test pipe (even race tracks have lower decibel limits), and posts street racing in traffic on his Instagram. He also wrecked a previous Z due to a "truck that came out of nowhere". I'd argue the guy was driving like a jackass and gave the cop cause. https://www.instagram.com/p/BepGSWLHgwx/?hl=en Last edited by CRiZO; 01-06-2019 at 02:23 PM. |

Initial plans are to go and observe how testing is actually done. One is about 5 miles where I work. My argument above may be insufficient. Curious if my set up will measure 95 db at 50 ft so I will go and have a state referee measure as is. Not sure how much it'll cost me. If under I'm good and will fight it to void the fine. Ticket was issued in Nov of 2018 so it is not 1k. If over 95 I will fix to get it under 95 and certified.
