I don't get the mentality that the customer is responsible when the shop screws up because "they didn't do the research."

It's impossible to do research on shops/find good ones, because you're really just going on word of mouth -- which he admits to early on. But people often lie about their experiences, because no one wants to be the fool that spend thousands on a shitty shop. Likewise, you only really hear negative things when they are horror stories -- and only when they happen to popular members of certain forums.

I don't know. I felt like he was rambling on for fifteen minutes subtly trying to say that his shop was awesome.

A little off topic, but thats why some insurance company's now have preferred shops you can go to, so say you get into an accident and need some work done, they have a preferred body shop that will do the work and will cover you for the time you have your car. The preferred shop goes through a strict evaluation, and if they have any small complaints they are taken off their list. Companies like All State do this, and for the customer it saves them time to look for a shop that is reputable, or does good work. So both of them are in a win win situation. Now, if you are not being reimbursed by insurance for your repairs, or you go to a tuner where insurance has no say and you are paying out of pocket, then lets say you are screwed.

Interesting vid. Funny as well.

Word of mouth is by far the best policy in my book... also repeat stories of good / or bad instances are a good reference to a shop's reputation. A desperate shop would do anything to attract publicity while a busy shop has no time for such things. You don't want to bring in your car to a shop that isn't busy, you might get the car in at the time you want, but at what cost? Your car might end up being the car to pay for that week's bills

Best advice to any and all... Visit the shop, and just talk to the staff and the owner. Its easy to tell a bs'er from a real person. If you feel pressured, or uncomfortable, walk away. Gut instincts are almost certainly right.

Yes, and take a look around, does the place look clean and organized (professional). Are they actively working on similarly priced or higher cars when you are there (cash flow)? IS the work they are doing in the same range as the work you want, a place that only does intakes and exhausts isn't the place you want to do something that needs a lot of engine work.

Just like the look of a person will tell you a lot about them same goes for a shop.
