Fellow Z owners without a garage - what do you do in the winter?

I was thinking about renting a storage unit for a few months during the winter, and putting tags on my civic. However, the local storage unit charges $140 a month. Do you guys just say screw it, and drive the Z during winter?

You could always buy a good cover and store it outside...

Red__Zed 09-16-2011 02:37 PM

Car cover?

NickBaragona 09-16-2011 02:56 PM

I'm afraid a car cover will scratch my car...so I was attempting to avoid that route.

Lots of people put winter tires on their 370Z and drive in the winter.

Clean the car, then put it on. A quality cover won't scratch it.

I drive my Z through the winter in MD. Try to get some all season or winter tires if you're gonna be driving it through the snow. That's what I did.

Stow it... let the salt eat up the Civic (or my Mazda).

b1adesofcha0s 09-16-2011 05:01 PM

Or you can use the civic for snow duty and when the roads are really salty.

You also have to remember that the cover is not sealed off underneath the car. Therefore, dust and debris will always get blown in between the car and the cover with a breeze or wind and will get caught between the paint and the cover which can and does mar paint.

If you have the means, a storage unit is my first choice OP.

:iagree:

The wind and dust will get underneath and up the sides of the cover.

Red__Zed 09-16-2011 05:10 PM

Storage unit is by far first choice. Many people run covers with no issue though.

I would not drive your z in the winter if they salt the roads. Nissan skimped on rustproofing, and 2-3 winters in you will be seeing major issues
