Are test pipes in NY illegal? I'm planning on buying F.I's Non resonated Test Pipes? Which is better performance wise, HFC's or Test pipes?

no they are not. the big thing about them is that some cars get "CEL" lights on which would lead to your car not passing NYS inspection.
No worries tho, UPREV can make that light disappear

As long as the check engine light is not on and you pass inspection, you're fine. They don't actually inspect to see if you have OEM Cats or not. And if they do, well...find another place to go to.
Also, HFCs are nice and safe, but test pipes definitely make more power. |

Did you just post a comment on my YouTube vid lol... Anyway I'm pretty sure that making any kind of change to your exhaust system that makes it louder is illegal in the state of NY. Its just that most cops wont bother you. Test Pipes are especially illegal because they remove the Cats which is a emission control part. But once again cops here are not going to crawl under your car and look for your cats. Also your Z will fail a visual inspection because there are no cats. But once again most people will not care. As long as your CEL stays off you should be good to go. And incase you did not notice I'm running TP.

Testpipes will give you tickets for sure.
I have gotten High Flow Cats instead. Cops still say things to me even though I am legal. I only have intake, exhaust, hfc. lol...

So have you ever been pulled over before? If I just used hfc's with non resonated catbacks from F.I instead of non resonated tp's how much of a difference will it make? Sound and performance wise. |

maybe 1-3 hp's... Not much difference only ton, test pipes make rasp, high flow cats make deepeness imo.

If I were going testpipes wanting those extra hp's id rather go with the fast intention longtube headers. My friend has those and that sounds badass.

I didnt go LTH's because most people dont see much gains over TP, HFC. But whatever. As for being pulled over, yea I have been pulled over but not for my exhaust. You can get Test Pipes and you wont have any problems with the cops. I have never heard of anyone here on the Island getting a ticket for No-Cats or anything like that. All the times I have been pulled over the cops have never once mentioned anything about my exhaust, even the time I was stopped for suspected street racing ( I was not street racing I was driving home with two friends one in a Mach1 and one in a TL, and that ment we where street racing) Anyway, go Test Pipes. And stop over at performance motorsports they will help you pick whats best.

The main thing with test pipes is the cel light I doubt you would even get a ticket for having a set I would get them and not worry.Like other people have said cops do not look under your car there is a big difference in sound from HFC and non res TP.
I have ran test pipes on both of the Z's I have owned |

If raspiness and crap sound is a concern, get Motordyne's ART Pipes. I had them on my 350Z and they were sublime, and provided notably better power than HFCs and TP.

as to the question of legality though, they are federally illegal in all states, only for off road use. Enforcement is a different story though.
