Default First time snow this winter... No garage

I will be moving from AZ to NY in January, and will not have a garage available. Currently the garage is filled with stuff that we can't get rid of so the best free option is to park it in the driveway with a cover.

I don't plan on driving the car much during the winter and will avoid driving in the snow at all costs.
  • What do I need to do to make sure my car survives the winter?
  • Does it make more sense to find a place that will store my car long term?
  • Will the Z be okay being parked outside all winter?

I owned a Volkswagen the last time I lived in NY and never babied my car like the Z - any advice is appreciated!

It's doable but I wouldn't recommend it, the salt alone is a big red flag. At the very least you need a quality car cover, I would look into renting a parking spot in a garage

That was my initial feeling as well :\

Thanks for the input!

Feel free to suggest a reputable long term storage facility or parking garage if anyone knows of one! Preferably in Queens.

I lived in Queens for most of my life and still have family there. The best advice I can offer is don't park your car on the street, at least not if you love your paint. I've watched people play bumper cars trying to parallel park more times than I care to remember. I suppose you could get one of those rubber mats to protect your rear bumper but there's not much you can do for the front. I rarely bring my Z to NY for this very reason.

If it's in a driveway, I don't see the problem. I've lived in an apartment in North NJ since I've owned the Z (will be looking to buy a home within the next year) and the car gets parked outside. It hasn't melted or blown up as far as I know so I'll think you'll be okay.

1. Avoid driving till a rain storm washes away the salt from a prior snow storm if possible.

2. Not sure the area you will be parking in, but Zs parked outside in NYC have a tendency to lose their wheels. Wheel locks may not be sufficent the people that steal them are usualy pros with silent tools.

3. Don't overthink it, it's a modern car and not a chevy vega, it will be fine.

Where in NY will you be moving to? Upstate or NYC?

Driveway hibernating with a good cover should be OK. Depends what kind of winter we have honestly. Last year I was driving on Christmas day @ 60 degrees.

I also suggest spending a few hundred bucks and finding someone willing to rent out their garage space. There's a few around me going for about 200-250 a month. This way you can keep it safe and dry, and plug in a battery tender too if their garage has an outlet.

If you're storing your car and not using it over the winter, I also strongly recommend getting a small battery tender to keep it topped up. I've been doing so since I bought my Z back in 2010. Original battery still going strong.

It's much cheaper in the other boroughs as you get farther out from Manhattan... But $150 seems like a great deal. I lived and drove daily in NYC from 2010-2014.

Garage came in handy this past weekend huh ?? Kept the Z nice and dry and away from the snow and salt. Great to have during this weather, nice price you got as well.
