AT only. What a mistake to not offer the MT.

We all know the Supra is a faster, more modern car. The Z relies on its driving engagement to keep up with something like the Supra, and now we get AT only…

Just an AT might not be bad, just depends on well it works...
it is just the times, not sure that Nissan will learn from the Supra.

Think about the backlash that the Supra got for being AT only… and that had a fantastic ZF 8 speed transmission! Compare that to the AT in the Z and it’s not even same league. If the new Z had the ZF 8 speed or a DCT, that’s a different story.

Note that I’m not hating on the AT as an option. I just think that the Z needs a MT to be relevant, and that the AT doesn’t compare to its rivals (Supra)

If you watch any head to head review, they will say that the Z has more driver engagement which would make it a more ‘exciting’ car to some people, while the Supra is undoubtedly a better platform, more power, grip, handling, etc.

So for the most exciting Nissan Z you take away the manual, which gives the majority of the driver engagement? Which is the Z’s selling point. Blah

Other thoughts…

Hopefully the tire change makes a big difference. Never heard of Dunlop SP sportmaxx tires.

Curious why they fitting the Nismo with some larger 4 piston Akebonos. Seems like fitting GTR 6 pistons would have been a nice parts bin upgrade with minimal re-engineering needed.

Front bumper is a vast improvement, but still doesn’t match the V1 Nismo long-nose.

Seems they made some effort to make the necessary changes from the 370Z platform. Clutch type diff, wider front wheels, etc. I wonder if the front sway bar is stiffer in proportion to the rear, as is the typical upgrade for the 370Z.

here is the reality. this is from autoweek....

But we really can't complain. In the current market it's a miracle that any carmaker is still selling sports cars. So far this year Nissan has sold only 996 Zs in the U.S. Compare that to almost 150,000 Rogue compact crossovers in the same time period. Nissan blames at least some of the slow sales on remnants of the chip supply problem. But larger than that is the market's obsession with crossover utility vehicles like the Rogue.

The closest competitor, the BMW-based Toyota Supra, brought in almost 5000 sales last year and is on track to move over 3000 this year.

https://www.autoweek.com/news/a44693...at-everything/

Also it quoted the following:
Nissan execs said that owners they spoke with wanted faster laps times with a Z NISMO, and the fastest lap time came from the automatic.

so who are they talking too? truthful for tracking an auto is easier and faster, not as much fun, but it is.

Wonder how this number will change after cars are getting delivered at a normal rate (there were production supply issues right?), as well as the dealer markups relaxing.

Haha…beat me to it. I agree - the ZF trans that the Supra has is a great transmission yet….purists are like ‘what about a manual’ - and if you throw in the exact same AT that the current Z has - EPIC FAIL! Anyway - hoping that Nissan will correct this wrong with the Nismo coming out in the future.

Exactly, fix the dealer markups (or open the option to purchasing directly from the manufacturer in the spec you want) and the sales will be there.

At this point any sports cars other than a Miata that are sub 100k is a win for us enthusiasts imo.

Also, the Z has a new 9 sp at now correct? So while I wish it had a dsg or at least a good zf at trans, perhaps this new auto will be better than the shitty 7 speed from last gen.

I really like the new nismo, would look great in the stable next to our TT RS.

I do think more time will be needed to digest this. People are always up in arms about everything a new release doesn't do or have.

It may be behind the Supra, it may still ultimately be a further re-polished Z34 platform, but there is some substance in that package as a street car. The dynamics will count for more than the peak performance.

I think the track car prospect/expectation is out the window. The platform started with a weight penalty. The sea of Z33 and Z34's are going to be a more favorable starting point for a raw build regardless because the price difference is too huge. A lot of people crying for an MT will never be in the conversation to buy the car in the first place.

Expect some models to make rounds with youtubers
Then the people who have money to throw
Then the people who have taken a hard enough look at it and decide its for them.

This won't be a crazy high profit/volume product. It won't cement itself as any type of pinnacle as the GT-R. It's an (attempted) contribution to brand image. Take it as it is, because you don't exactly see anyone making the car everyone wants.

Barring some huge recall problem, if it was within my financial means, I would be taking a hard look at this, and see past the AT-only option. Trying a Performance trim RZ34 (manual albeit), it was so much cooler/nicer of a car than the lukewarm impression it gave through the internet. In the world I live in, I'll admit it's a nicer place to be than the Z34 I've been going well out of my way to keep in my possession.
