A friend of mine on the Exec level of Toyota recently retired. He informed me that while Toyota will spend a lot on hybrid/electric car production. They do not feel that electric is the long term future, as there are a lot of draw backs which was mentioned in the posts above. Plus the fact that most electrical grids can only handle a certain amount of electric cars.

They are working with other companies to produce hydrogen, at a much lower cost. If that can be accomplished, they feel, that this will be the long term future. Right now, hydrogen cost is the biggest draw back. If this can be achieved, Toyota would most likely start entering in joint ventures and place hydrogen stations in strategic locations outside the state of California. Currently, California is the only state with strategic hydrogen filling stations.

Can you imagine the largest car/hydrogen car manufacturer also being invested in it's filling stations?

I retired from power generation. I know how shakily the power grid is. As it stands. It will need to be up-graded to handle the added load from electric cars. But the biggest problem with that is NIMBY's (Not In My Back Yard idiots). The grid needs up-graded anyways from a national security stand point.

Not to shift the focus from the Z, but the supra is for sure coming out. We all saw the functional prototype being tested along with its BMW Z4 twin. Why wasn't this at least shown at the TAS? I always thought TAS was the main source where future production vehicles were showcased (along with other concepts, of course), but I guess there will always be those vehicles that just pop into production out of no where...
This thread made me intrigued/ excited, then doubtful, then angry, then disappointed, and now confused LOL talk about a mix of emotions.

Predictability and leaving the "excitement" out is not what Toyota want for the next supra... my guess I they do some grand entrance with that car to bring it back to life in a new body...
I'm thinking like transformers and the cars they introduced in that movie... maybe like the next Bond car or something along that line.

Because of cost of the cars, range, and the time it takes to recharge. Just wait until people see the cost of a replacement battery! It's about 1/2 the cost of the car.
Plus they will have a generator in the truck to actually go somewhere and get back. Recharge is a cold hearted bitch.

Electric cars will not be replacing gasoline motors anytime soon. Electricity will become to expensive to afford charging a electric car.

A couple of European countries have already banned the fossil fuel engines beginning in 2030. More are thinking about. It's all electric. The other thing. Now we are paying fuel tax on a gallon of gas. Electric cars don't pay this. What has been talked about is a road users tax. It's based on the number of miles you drive per year. They are still trying to figure out the details on payment. One idea is at the end of the year. You will pay one lump sum for the number of miles driven. The other is that you pay at the time of recharging. The recharging socket will have a wireless sensor to the car's odometer to detect the number of miles driven since last recharge.

European is so much different than North American. Most European countries are so small that everything is centralized or have fantastic public transportation to get around. Most of their borders are less than 200km apart.

I would really like to see it perform on a vacation trip longer than 500 km(~800 miles) and be practical. I just don't see it in the next 20 years.

Maybe a gas/electric but time will tell.

I see more of a hybrid type of car for the us because of the distances. Europe more of the electric. Really would like the H2 fuel cell get more R&D in it. Think it's the best way to go.

I still don't know why we haven't gone to an electric car with a diesel generator.

Honda has a hydrogen car https://www.caranddriver.com/honda/clarity

Sounds good to me -- batteries kind of suck, and creating them/disposing of them generates tons of toxic garbage.

What is old, will be new again. Given enough time. Nissan is getting their moneys worth out of the tooling for the Z.

10 year's running & plenty available part's (both oem & aftermarket)...You're able to build your ~Z~ into a supercar-if desired.
Recently seen 700-800+ whp made on pump 93 & e85....So the Horses can be Churned out; as long as you're willing to spend the time & $$$$.
As i live in SC & people know how the State Gov. loves to tax you every year on your property item's,,,it's cost effective to build up an older vehicle vs. purchasing a brand new one.
You have the option to insure it for whatever value you choose,
That's my reasoning for building my own Hot-Wheel's car & repairing my older vehicles vs. planning a future purchase of something new.
A Harley Trike could possibly fall into the picture over the next 3-4 year's.
