2014 oil change different?!?
I got a new 2014 370z and it's say to nm change the oil every 5k including the initial break in one as well however the older models of the 370z have one scheduled at 3,750 why is this. Should I change it early. Can I start using my Mobil 1, or use the free Nissan oil during the 1st change. Thank you in advance.

Lot's of reasons. Oil-related warranty claim experience. History of oil analysis, used engine analysis, other stuff...they have a lot of experience with this VVEL engine out on the road around the world that, between Infinity and Nissan, they didn't used to have. They found out that given their oil requirements and the quality of modern engine lubrication that they didn't need the overly conservative drain intervals that they originally thought. My 2008 GMC, and before than my 2005 Denali 6 liter, both have had 6000 mile drain interval since Day 1.
They used to require some silly kind of ester-based oil in 2009 and 2010. They got rid of that requirement for 2011. Gotta love a company that learns as they go along. |

^^^ FWIW: I found that 4.5K was about right going by UOA's on my car and also comparing and contrasting with other folk's Z's.
So 5K sounds perfectly reasonable, whereas 3.7K was a bit early.

I was getting close to 3000 on my 2014 and was looking at threads on what others are doing for their first oil change and after reading a few I had decided to wait until 5000 to do the first change. My wife and I went on a short beach trip this past weekend and when I turned over 3750 miles the oil maintenance light came on. So, the book says 5000 miles but they pre-set the warning to 3750? Of course, you can change the milage warning to what you want, but I found it a little strange that it was pre-set at 3750.

Probably not. Modern oils, synthetic or mineral, don't really break down or wax up, but the additives do, especially the viscosity index improvers. Likewise, the detergent additives are only marginally more capable than they were 20 years ago. The real improvements in oil longevity have been catalytic refining and development of the group II base stocks. Extended drain intervals to 6000 miles are based on the subsequent lower need for VI improvers with their shorter life due to shear, but detergents keeping combustion by products in suspension are the current limiting step.
Engine manufacturers and new car warranty providers watch these things closely. They're the ones that set oil performance requirements that the oil manufacturers follow, and they adjust their oil requirements and drain intervals accordingly. Last edited by MacCool; 04-23-2014 at 10:26 AM. |

Even Porsche in the US recommends recommends 7500mi/12000km changes on the 911 Turbo using Mobil 1. Far exceeding Nissan on a motor putting out much more power and heat. To each his own but oil is way more durable than you can imagine. For most folks they dont come near its limits. Fleet managers know it well and are moving entire fleets to longer intervals. Most of this is very old news. Stop Changing Your Oil! - Edmunds.com - Easy to read no BITOG arguments among oil nerds. The analysis is simple and to the point. |

My mom's Mercury Milan hybrid has a 15K mile recommended OCI by the dealer.
And she still manages to miss it

OP, I myself am creeping up on the 1200 mile marker (within a month, sheesh) and have already purchased my lineup of Red Line oils for replacement. Are you doing anything once you hit the 1200 mile mark or are you waiting until 5K to change any fluids?
How about others w/new Z's? What did you all do? |
