The hatch has to lift enough to clear the latch, that is all. It's probably less than two inches, just enough to get some fingers in there.

Educ8r - sucks that the SM was worthless where you went, but that's how the tech gets paid and how the shop is able to write it off as a warranty. Told me the same thing, but having multiple mechanics in the family I already knew what to expect.

There are "open" and "closed" hatch pictures in my albums btw.

This was the day I got them installed, probably a smidgen lower now, but I still haven't seen it fail once since the install.

Can't believe some people a ready to give up on Nissan because of a minor problem like spring on the hatch. I think there is a little more to deciding on what make of car to purchase and every other maker is going to have some issue. I can understand that they have to see the actual problem before they can fix it under warrantee, intermittent problems are always an issue. In the case of a bad dealer, I would just go to another.

Believe it! Was it my or error or Nissan's error that my $40K car had the wrong springs? And you're right every other dealership (foreign or domestic) have problems and are full of asses that work in them. There are a very small percentage of people who would much rather keep a customer than lose one over $100. I'm not to 'bent outta shape' eventually if I need the new part I will purchase it, only a fool would wait 2 hours to have spring lifts replaced. There's no way I would purchase another vehicle from Nissan, "cause I'm funny about where I spend my money!"

When you took yours to get exchanged did they have to see that your trunk was getting stuck? When I took mine since it was not getting stuck they said they could not fix but when I got home the trunk would not release.

What do I need to do for them to put the bigger springs if they can't replicate the problem when I'm over there?

I'll say this again, but they have updated the part number for the stock spring lifts for the Z. If you tell them to check the part number, they will see that the number has been updated which will give them the go ahead to order replacements under warranty. This was the information I was given by the service manager at a local dealer I have been dealing with. They were on back order last I heard, but they should come in within a couple weeks.

I received mine this week and they are indeed a bit taller and stiffer.

I have an '09 base Z with no spoiler. If I press the button to release the hatch and lift, it opens sometimes and catches sometimes. However, if I press the button and wait for just a split second, it opens the first time, every time. I think, it just takes an instant for the catch to complete its opening function.

only a fool would spend money when it's unnecessary? i just pulled out my iphone and headphones, then sat back, listened to some music, and played some games. pretty decent morning, lol.

if you would like to go purchase a BMW as your next car, feel free, but if you have a problem then you will be forced to leave your car with them, as that's how mechanics work.

Gentlemen.....

Let me summarize.

23 pages of (mostly) whining for a 4 cent fix that you can do in ten minutes in the comfort of your own garage.....

You guys have your priorities all fooked up....
