I took my z to Connell Nissan and half hour later, it's all done. The new ESCL is quieter when is activated/deactivated. I'll probably pull the fuse again this weekend.

I'm one of those guys who cut my brown wire. I'm going in to have it replaced next week. Do you think I should just leave it cut and they'll fix it? Should I fix it myself before I bring it in?

I doubt they're going to refuse to fix it because of the cut wire, especially because that harness isn't part of the service campaign and is out of warrantee anyway... I'm just worried that in the instructions for the recall, it will say something like "Verify operation by winding sound when ignition turned on" or something and they guy won't know what to do. haha

Glad to see Nissan step up on this one. Got my notice in the mail last week. I'll get my 09 Z fixed asap.

Why are you doing anything if you cut the wire? Why not just leave it as is and be worry free, that's what I'm doing.

UPDATE: After receiving no response from my email to Nissan North America, I then received the service campaign notice in the mail. I promptly contacted Nissan North America and explained to them that I had already replaced my steering wheel lock unit before it crapped out on me. I explained that I had retained all my receipts for the steering wheel lock and the cost to have the Nissan service department near me remove the old lock and put the new one in and requested they reimburse my expense.

Nissan North America made me take my Z back to the Nissan Service department to verify the correct steering wheel lock was installed. Then the warranty rep at the Nissan Dealership submitted my claim into the system and I provided copies of all my receipts.

Today I received a check from Nissan North America for both the cost of the steering wheel lock that I purchased myself and for the cost of installation that was charged by my local Nissan Service department.

So I'm curious. So many comments about Rev C and even Rev D being prone to failure, but from all the searching I did, I can only find actual member failures with Rev A&B. So why does everyone seem to believe Rev D (or C) is prone to failure when all the reports of lock up seem to be A or B.

I've got a 2nd Gen Rev C, so I'm curious.

There have been several reports of Rev C's failing. See the link in my sig for a list of all the ESCL/SLU-related posts I could find as of December of last year. There is also an list of failure reports I found, showing the revision where known.

My skepticism of the reliability of Rev D is based on the history of revs A-C. Maybe Nissan finally got it right but it appears to me to be a bad design. I think Nissan did the right thing when they deleted the ESCL from the Z.

I just purchased an 09 sport MT with 30k miles on the 2nd of July. This issue started a week after owning the car. I called a dealership today and they seemed rather helpful. They told me that they would have to test the car to make sure the ESCL is the problem.

I have an appointment tomorrow and I shall post my results upon completion.

Hopefully I will no longer have to push the damn start button 20-30 times to get this kitten to purr.

Pushing the starter button 20-30 times does nothing with a broken steering lock. They shouldn't have to test anything. It's a recall. They replace it regardless and you shouldn't have to pay a dime. All they need to do is check the Rev model.

If my z is not in warranty does this cost anything to get fixed?

If you're covered under the recall (check your VIN), then it should not cost you anything but your time regardless of your warranty status.

It shouldn't cost you anything. My dealer sent a letter, but I did buy it new from them so they have a record and my address. If you're the second owner, you may not have gotten it. Just call the dealership and tell them the service campaign number.

NissanUSA said my VIN needs the recall done. I took it into my nearest Nissan dealer and the service advisor said they will need the car for a full day and I'd have to pay $35 for a loaner car...
