6qts... TO MUCH OIL!?!
So I just finished my oil change today. Put the 5qts in ran it - added about another 1/8 ... checked the dipstick and noticed I was still not really full...
I also checked for leaks of any kind - non were found. Took it to a local Nissan shop, showed them and said: "Yea, your low - you need to add more". I told him I had already given it more then 5qts... He responded that it will take a little more of the last qt. He even went so far to say that we (Nissan) give 5quarts as a pretty close guide, but you have to trust what the car is saying - Your dip stick shows your low. I got home gave it alittle more - still a good bit away from being "High" on the dip stick..... I would say after close to 6qts - I am 75% toward the "H" (for high) on the dipstick. I have basically put 6qts of oil in this car, and after everything I have read about it only taking (at most) 5 1/8 qts - really freaked out. Its un-moded. As in no oil pan spacer, and running the stock Nismo Oil Filter... Unless the Nismo oil filter holds more oil... Which as its the same size of stock - I don't see how that is the case. What are your thoughts? UPDATE: Basically, I've decided to go pick up on "Oil Extractor" - a syhon for oil and lubricants. Pull the extra .8 quarts out of the dipstick tube and call it a day on this one. Sucks that I have to go buy this thing, but who knows - I hear it can come in handy when you are changing your other fluids.

Trust the dipstick and monitor the oil level. Make sure you're on level ground and let the car cool down a bit. If it's consuming oil, you'll need to have the dealer run the test. A few early 370z's had issues and needed the short block replaced. It doesn't seem like it's consuming oil though.

Checking again - after the car has had time to sit.... the oil is measuring up to and on (a pinch past) "H".... Not feeling good.

Just started the car and it smells a little strong (the exhaust) - maybe like its burning oil.... I just pulled it up the driveway. No smoke or anuthing, but it smelt "rich". I feel like an idiot.

Take note of fluctuations in oil level over time -- there is a TSB, and some of these VQ's, for reasons that remain unclear, glug oil to the point where the short block needs to be replaced (although you get a long block anyway, I believe).

Doing the math - the car is rated to take 5 1/8 qts.
I gave it 6 qts ... mainly because I didn't acount for the uneven driveway, but mostly because the Nissan tech. Anyways, my car is now over by .875 qts.... Should I drain some oil? I think I may just do it, but honestly not sure the best way how.

Something to take into consideration for oil consumption in this case. If you overfill, you're more than likely going to start using oil. If you see this happening, the only cure is to completely drain the engine and refill properly. When you overfill, then oil gets frothed up in the camshafts and starts using oil.
I say this so that you won't automatically think you have an consumption issue if it starts using oil.

So what do you guys think though? Did I over fill with oil by adding (almost) and extra qrt???
Should I drain some off?

Probably wouldn't hurt to drain a little as long as you haven't driven a lot.

No need to freak. It's not a huge deal. As far as draining, just loosen the drain plug without taking it out. You'll get it all over you hand, but it's the easiest thing to do. By just loosening, it's easy to quickly tighten it back up.

Wouldn't hurt to pickup a Qwik Valve for your car and replace your drain plug, i'm sure this won't happen again but you have the option of dropping a little bit of your oil or closing it off if you need to with the swipe of a finger.

This thing is awesome. You can use it to pretty much do anyting... but in this case it kicked ***. In the manual it shows you how you can use it to bleed brakes - pull oil from trans and diffs ... really handy.
