[ 370z ] Problem: rear noise "clank"

Hello everybody, sorry for my (bad) english... I'm writing this post because i have a problem with my 370z (automatic) There is a noise ("clank") when the car is stopped,

Default [ 370z ] Problem: rear noise "clank"

Hello everybody, sorry for my (bad) english...

I'm writing this post because i have a problem with my 370z (automatic)

There is a noise ("clank") when the car is stopped, during i put "D" or "R".
It's appeiring with brake pedal full push or no...
this noise seem to come from rear left...

If someone know this problem...?

First thing I'd do is look for something wrapped around the drive shaft. If that's not it, vrfreak has the right idea - jack it up and start twisting on things. Good luck.

I went to see this video on his link and it locked up my Imac and wouldn't let me leave the screen. I don't know what you the deal is but it had a small window for cleaning Mac's. I don't know if a Mod can check or do anything about this?

I had to do a force quit and restart to get rid of it.

Just a heads up for anyone else.

Hated to open this one up, but what is the cause? I get a "thunk" or a knock when I go from D to R or vice versa when parking or backing up. Seems to be coming from rear on driver's side. I thought it was the brakes slipping, but not too sure now. Any ideas?

I'm gonna go ahead and say this is kinda normal... My car makes that sound too, actually, MUCH LOUDER, like an ogre is using a sledgehammer to slot the car into gear...
And don't all of you FEEL that you're physically moving gears or something of that nature? (For the gun guys, it feels like you're locking the bolt on a rifle)

(Then again I BEAT THE SHÍT out of my car... So maybe that's the reason mine is worse)

The R-to-D-to-R-Clunk can be caused by a lot of things. Sloppy motor, xmission and rearend mounts, transmission slippage, worn u-joints, rearend wear, and brakes come to mind. Since it seems to be coming from one corner, I'd look at the brakes. Could be some slack where the caliper mounts or glazed pads. Also check the e-brake; it may be a little too tight and still touching the drum when released.

The car was previously owned by an elderly couple and when I bought it only had 9600 miles on it. It now only has 12,500. I doubt seriously it has any of the ragged out or broken mounts or u joints. The brakes look perfect. I did find something on here late yesterday that makes sense. Since it is only on the drivers side, this fits perfectly. I read (sorry can't find it now) that the axle nut comes slightly loose in the hub. It can't come completely loose, because of the cotter pin. But the direction the driver's side wheel rotates, it can loosen that nut a little, causing a little clunk when you shift out/in gears when parking. The fix was to use blue Loctite on the threads and torque it back to 77 -80 ft./lbs. I dunno. May try it out when we finally get some decent weather around here.

sorry to open this up again but did it work? I am having the same sound and it is driving me crazy.

Is it a clunk or a loud click? My 350Z made that sound and my 370z makes that sound when backing up and applying the brakes. It's the brake pads, there's some play where they sit. Normal forward braking keeps them in place but when you reverse and apply the brakes they move back slightly and make a click sound.

It was actually my axle nut. It was half a turn loose. I thought it might be the brakes too, I was going to check that next.

I had this EXACT problem ( 09 7AT ) - took it into the dealership, they replaced the ENTIRE driveshaft, and the right rear axle. ALL covered by powertrain warranty. If anyone needs to see a copy of the fix report from ( Larry H Miller , Nissan, here in AZ ) just let me know. - if you have a copy or a pic of what they did to mine, it may get them to go that far with yours. TBH, I'm stoked I've got that many brand new parts put into an 09 I bought on March 5th 2014 with 22k miles! Good luck!
