So I took my 370 in for service....

Actually just for an oil change, its the first oil change so I figured might as well have the dealer do it. For the record I have a 2010 40th that i bought used in Jan, it had about 10k miles on it, so this was the first oil change while in my hands. Anyways when I get there they tell me I have to get esteroil.... it was only 10 bucks more than synthetic so I said sure why not.

Is it really required thought?

extra tidbit, turns out I have the gold extended warranty up to 100k, which I didnt know at the time of purchase! :happydance:

its what Nissan recommends, others will use redline and other brands

My first oil change was free.

Did you ask for a free oil change?

Typically first oil changes are complimentary like a free car wash and tank of gas when you take delivery.

Use the Search feature, type in 'Ester Oil'.

You'll find plenty of discussion over why it's good/not good and what oil people use. :tiphat:

Are you going to continue at the pace of a 10k mile change interval? I only do 5k and am glad i do. The outcomming oil is always looking like it needs replacement.

Like I said in my original post, the car had 10k on it when I bought it back in Jan. THe dealer I bought it from did an oil change on it then, 3500 miles later I took it in for its first oil change with me. I cant imagine doing 10k oil changes, 5k seems ok though depending on how hard you drive it.

Nissan's factory scheduled maintenance is very conservative. While under warranty I suggest following it. I don't use the most aggressive schedule, just the minimum recommended to be complaint. I personally see no reason to use the Ester oil either (its not required as many have stated).

For our car, it will hit the time limit (6 months) before mileage and that's when I change the oil. I am letting the dealer do this for me (a first in my past 20 years of driving, I have done nearly all of my scheduled maintenance). I choose to run Pennzoil Ultra though honestly a good dino oil would be more then sufficient for this OCI.

After 5 more years and the extended warranty expiration, I likely will go down to once a year changes (6-8K miles) which will be backed by a few used oil analysis reports. No sense in wasting resources.

Mine was free but they gave me the basic $30 change not the full synthetic. Cheap bastards

:iagree:

I also did the factory maintenance plan http://www.naxja.org/forum/images/smilies/repair.gif thinking it included the ester oil & to protect the warranty. My service dealer said it did not include the ester oil but could pay extra for it. He also said as little as I drive the car & I'm not racing the car, the regular oil is just fine. Once the plan is over, I will go back to maintaining the car myself probably with Redline.

YMMV

I payed 80 bucks for that oil. Its totally worth it, Nissan will use the cheap **** since it don't cost you a dime. So better upgraded oil is better, You might be able to buy the oil next time online at a cheaper rate and have them use it.
