Loud ticking noise from engine

If you tell them you added 5 quarts of oil and you do your own oil changes, they will deny your warranty claim for sure. How long has it been

How long has it been since you did the oil change?

Once, when I was a teenager about 25 years ago I changed my own oil and forgot to put the drain plug back in so all the new oil went in the oil pan with the old oil. I drove it down the block and the oil light was on so I turned back and figured it out quick.

I guess my point is that if you added 5 quarts of oil, you either screwed up the oil change, or someone drained it out to screw with you. Only three ways to get oil out of an engine, drain it, burn it, or leak it. If you were leaking or burning enough to go through 5 quarts you would be smoking like a spy car or leaving an oil slick so huge you and everyone else would know it.

Just keep this in mind, because this is exactly the way the dealer is going to look at it.

You have a oil consumption issue ... Your dealer will do a consumption test and hopefully replace it .. Nissan engines are notorious for chewing up oil including other makes and models ... Good luck !

I have and your comments about someone draining his oil or he did it wrong is laughable .. Obviously you have no clue about the vq and oil consumption issues .. His dealer could be a dck because he changes his own oil and try to deny a claim but it won't happen .. There is even a Nissan bulletin on oil consumption ..

My 06 Z had the block replaced 3 times for consumption issues and Nissan bought back my car .. That noise in the vids is rod knock ... Engine is shot and they will replace it free of charge as long as it is still under warranty...

Uh, not doubting oil consumption issues on 09's, but his car is very low miles 2010 for one. For two he has spun a rod bearing, so your suggestion for doing a oil consumption test is laughable. The car isn't even drivable because the motor is blown. Third, He added 5 quarts after the rod started knocking. Not 2, but 5. 5 full quarts. The entire oil capacity of the whole engine.

The reason he spun a bearing was due to low oil and no oil .. My car started to consume at 6000 mile .. This issue was suppose to be resolved when Nissan made the hr ... Guess what ?? They hr an vhr has the same issues as the 06 revup .. Oil consumption .. Because of the oil issues you get rod knock , spun bearings and a new engine ..

So what's the verdict?

1. Tell them it had no oil and I added 5 quarts

2. Act like I have no idea what's going on, which is mostly true.

considering the dealer is pretty aware of what happens on the forum, be honest with them.

Looks like oil consumption, I never replace the crush washer when I change my oil and never leak oil. Get it towed and hopefully Nissan will chalk it up under oil consumption and you'll get a fresh motor!

Ok so it sounds like honesty is the best policy here. Which is fine by me, I always try to stick with honesty. So I'm going to tell them it was really low on oil and making loud ticking noises, and I added oil to the engine to see if that would help, and it did not.

Just because you don't know how to change oil (forgetting to put the drain plug back in) doesn't mean others don't know how to change their oil. Also a dealer isnt just going to deny warranty because you do your own oil changes as long as you keep documentation, receipts and change interval records. Just saying..

I have always changed my own oil .. Even when I had my new engine replaced in my Z and it failed 3 times .. After 3000 miles it started to eat oil again ..Go in there and tell them the truth .. They will make sure your oil is full and tape your oil cap and filter to make sure they are not tampered with during the test .. After a thousand miles they will check your oil .. If it is consuming like you say it is it will be low.. They will order you a new block and hopefully once installed it will solve your problem .. Also you can request a diminished value check from Nissan for the new engine .. They gave me 1000.00 dollars and after countless engines bought the Z back . Since I bought my G new in 08 it has not consumed any oil ... I feel your guys pain .. Such a drawn out process.. Also, stop letting your friends drain your oil ....: bowrofl:
