Manual transmission fluid change

I was browsing through the owner's manual looking for how many quarts is needed to replace the manual transmission fluid, but the manual did not state how many. Anyone knows?

Also, do you guys recommend Amsoil Manual Transmission Fluid for our manual transmission?

Kingbaby 05-31-2011 11:54 AM

From what I've read, using the OEM/Nissan oil is best. Switching may results in harsh shifts/sticking...

What mileage are you at?

shadoquad 05-31-2011 12:03 PM

I agree with "Bruce Banner" over there lol

I'd stick with stock.

Kingbaby 05-31-2011 12:06 PM

nice! lmao

TongMan 05-31-2011 12:43 PM

I only have 8k miles on my Z. Still got a ways to go before changing out my MTF. I am changing out the MTF in my other car and was just curious about the capacity in our 370z's.

sammy 06-01-2011 10:28 AM

2 quarts, I chnaged to redline. They make one specific to our Z's. It's been very smooth, especially when running cold.

m4a1mustang 06-01-2011 10:39 AM

Redline is good stuff.

Pure Bovine Scatology! Nissan fluid is probably the worst stuff you could use. Red-Line, Amsoil, etc. are very good alternatives. I noticed better, smoother shifts when I changed mine to Red-Line.

wheee! 06-01-2011 11:11 AM

I second the motion. I used 6MT's recommendations and my car shifts better than ever....

TongMan 06-01-2011 03:18 PM

When should the MTF be changed? It's 30k miles or 3 years for my Civic.

tranceformer 06-01-2011 03:31 PM

I switched to Amsoil synthetic trans oil 75w90. No problems in the cold, heat, racing etc.

TongMan 06-01-2011 08:10 PM

Are these good for our 370z transmission:

djpathfinder 06-01-2011 08:52 PM

I used Redline. Doesn't hurt to switch to better stuff ASAP. Then go by the recommended change interval. You fill it with a pump until it starts leaking out. I think you end up using somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.5 quarts.

I just looked it up on the amsoil website. What you posted in the pic is TOO THIN, it's actually a 5w30. If you really want to use amsoil, use the 'synthetic manual and transaxle gear lube 75w90 API GL4"

http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/ima..._qt_640pxh.jpg

TongMan 06-02-2011 12:45 AM

Ok. Thanks. I am using these for my Civic.

ChrisSlicks 06-02-2011 06:01 AM

The gear oil viscosity scale is different, so 5W30 is actually pretty close to 75W90. They probably did this on purpose to prevent people from trying to stick engine oil in their transmission and vice versa. I've had good results with Redline MT-85.

TongMan 06-02-2011 07:57 AM

so, 5w30 is actually 75w90??

tranceformer 06-02-2011 08:13 AM

According to the specs on the Amsoil site, they were quite different in viscosity.

Red Line MT-85 Manual Transmission Fluid 1 Quart - 370Z - performance parts

Quote:

Description: Recommended for Nissan 350Z, 370Z, G35, and G37 (also most Maxima, Altima & Sentra).
* Safe for brass synchros, as it lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage
* Offers quicker shifts, perfect synchronizer coefficient of friction * Eliminates notchy shifting, even when cold
* High performance gear protection and longer synchro life
* Recommended for GL-1, GL-3 and GL-4 applications, as well as where most special synchromesh fluids are specified
* Satisfies the gear oil viscosity requirements of 75W, 80W, 85W and motor oil viscosities of SAE 30 and 5W30.

Includes 1 Quart, 4 are required to complete the Job

The viscosities are essentially the same yes, but the formulation and additives are a little different. Gear oil has shock additives to help cushion the gears as they come together and additives to help the synchro's grip more easily (limit the slipperiness of the fluid).

TongMan 06-03-2011 08:39 AM

also confirming that we need 4 quarts for our 370z?

No, the MT only needs 2.5 quarts (2.83 L).

TongMan 06-03-2011 08:52 AM

oh ok. The link I gave about stated we needed 4 quarts. Weird.

ChrisSlicks 06-03-2011 09:49 AM

If you were doing a flush maybe, but 2 was plenty when I did mine. Just make sure the car is nice and level so that you get an accurate fill.

Zappypants 06-03-2011 06:04 PM

My 06 Z had the world's notchiest transmission ever. After 3K miles, I switched to Redline MT-90 (if memory serves) and couldn't believe the difference. Going with MT-85 when I do my next oil change (I mean hey, I'll be under there anyway, right?) :D

AlphaSnacks 06-03-2011 06:32 PM

What does a typical tranny fluid change run? Is it as quick and simple as a standard oil change on our cars?

Edit: NM. Pretty damn easy on this car. Drain plug underneath. Refill plug on the side of the tranny.

Zappypants 06-03-2011 06:41 PM

Spearfish25 has an excellent DIY: http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...il-change.html

It's easier, IMO, than a oil change, with the exception that you'll need a pump for the new fluid. No idea what the cost would be, sorry, but if you provided the oil I can't imagine it being too much at all.

Carbon_z 06-07-2011 03:37 AM

whats everybody changing their tranny oil at???

ALSO, anybody forced to change their clutch yet? Trying to figure out some future planning lol

wheee! 06-07-2011 08:58 AM

Did ALL the fluids with synthetics (except brakes and clutch) at 5000kms. The diff was especially gross from the factory setup. Tranny looked like new, but wanted better.

ChrisSlicks 06-07-2011 09:04 AM

I changed my transmission fluid at about 7000 miles, the fluid still looked brand new. The diff on the other hand was a nasty smelly mess.

Really? I just put 100% 3 full quarts ending with a 50mL syringe to get every last drop and putting my finger in the hole I feel nothing yet! As others have said 3-4 should be what it is. No idea how you're getting away with 2 unless you put the drain plug back in as soon as you take it off. Sucks cause now the stores closed.

We've had great success with the Motul Gear 300. It is a great fully synthetic fluid that is smooth as butter as well as protects the trans.

The 6MT must use almost exactly 3 qts. I spilled a small amount and was not able to fill it up until it was running from the fill hole.

I've done my trans 2x now and it takes 3.5 around there of. 3 qts is way too low. the rear diff takes 2 on the money.

Lunar-Eclipse 12-21-2013 11:27 PM

I agree with roy'sz. I did my 6MT and diff about a month ago and the trans used 3 1/2 1qt bottles. The diff used 2 1qt bottles.

equalme 12-22-2013 01:06 AM

They should revise the DIY: http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...il-change.html

The rear diff only used about 1-3/4 qt when I did mine.

That depends on the levelness of the z. Even if you have it on jackstands, the diff is still lower than when you drive it. What I did was jack it up on jackstands until level..but kept most pressure on the diff instead of letting it hang. And that is the differnce of the half qt.

Same for me job done on a level surface car on the ground.

When is this service actually supposed to be done? Isn’t it like a 50k mile service? I bought my car a year ago with 70k miles and as far as I know it had never been done. The diff fluid had been changed though according to the service records. I’m actually at my local dealer having the tranny fluid being changed as I type. It took me a long time and a bit of a hassle for them to actually give me a price for this service though. Legit it took me 3 times of asking about the service before I finally complained about it on a “how was your experience with us” survey and once I did that, they jumped into action and gave me a 20% discount on it. Their price is $150. Which yeah, is a bit nuts considering how easy it is. They charge like $45 for a full synthetic oil change (which is damn good, especially for a dealer) but then turn around and charge triple for a manual transmission fluid change. And yeah, it’s even more for an auto, so don’t think they’re just charging me the same as an auto “transmission flush”.

Elmo370z 11-29-2018 11:45 PM

Its literally two bolts you unscrew buy a pump and fill it back up. Worse case scenario it takes you 30 mins to finish the job.
