Transmission Slipping? 2009 370z
 

Hello….I drive a 2009 370z base model(automatic), a few weeks ago I started to notice that when the car is cold in the morning, I start it up, put it in drive, take off and when I reach a stop sign I press on the gas and it just revs then it kicks in and goes. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. After the car warms up it drives normal and this doesn't happen anymore. Kinda feels like its slipping or something. I did take it in and I was told nothing was wrong but its happening again.

make them keep it over night and try to get it to do it in the AM when it is cold

If you have a video camera, you can record it happening in your own circumstances and show it to them too.

So what did the shop say?

Mine did the same thing it was down 3 liters.

well.....they claimed my 370z is the first Z they have encountered that has so many miles on it (35k,since 2009).. and this is the first time they had to flush a trans fluid on these cars... the 370 has a new kind of trans where each time the fluid is flushed they need to recalibrate the trans by computer.... they forgot to do that..took the car back twice... no damage was done but I am now looking for an independent place that specializes in Z's

Ok, that's weird...

Hmmm I have had the same problem for 5 months now. Took it to the dealer to do a flush 3 months ago and no diffrence. I put 1/2 liter tranny fluid in 2 weeks ago and it fixed the problem. Today my car sputtered its way to a stop on the highway . The dealer says it needs a valve body and a tcm! Go figure.It sounds like there wasnt enough tranny fluid from the factory and now it screwed the trans slipping .4-5 would really slip on a hot day.

I have similar issues with slipping between shifts ( revs go up during a shift ) . I also have issues with delayed downshifts going up inclines and once in a great while the car will shake creeping up an incline. How were you able to add trans fluid to this car? I'd prefer not to go to the dealer.

Jack up the car on the front. On the passengers side of the tranny right beside the catalytic converter is a plug. This trans casing is the same used in all 7 speeds. What does evrey other 7 speed vehicle come equipped with?.. a dipstick! Theres a #10 bolt used to hold down a plug with an o ring gasket where the dipstick should be. Just remove this and get an small diameter hose about a meter long , attach it to a funnel and fill from engine compartment. I havent had any luck with warranties so i drained the stock fluid and put in mobil 1 full synthetic at fluid. I noticed right away the shifts were snappy. Also when in D on the highway, put your foot to the floor and it responds like click click boom! Redline right now. Im my opinion the stock tranny fluid is way too thick, its like mollases. I have had this fluid in my car for 3 months now and beat the living crap out of it on the street and the track. At the track last year it would slip badly in 4-5 shift when hot. This year topped up with mobil no slip and the 2-3 shift slams my helmet into the seat! Not advising you guys change fluid but thats just my experience.

We figured out why it stalled on the highway -the cursed fuel starvation issue. But theyre still changing the valve body and tcm under warranty. Took the car lapping yesterday and with more than a 1/4 tank of gas car shifted and ran perfectly. They diagnosed this problem with the tranny slipping before i put the extra fluid in.

In response to these, I have to say a couple things:

1) The reason they didn't put a dipstick on it is because properly filling it requires the Consult III tool, which is what the earlier quote means by "recalibrate the trans by computer". The trick is these trannies are very sensitive to the correct fill level, and the fill level is highly dependent on the fluid temp, and only with the dealership's Consult III tool can you get the TCM's reading of the fluid temp. The procedure is lined out in the service manual, but you're not going to be able to do it accurately without Consult III (and the dealership should've known that, shame on them).

2) Our 7AT requires Matic-S from Nissan. I haven't found any definitive info on what the difference between that and Nissan's older Matic-J standard, but I wouldn't take chances with my 7AT warranty. Almost all of the aftermarket fluids available (including Mobil) do not claim Matic-S compatibility, only Matic-J if anything. The lone exception is Redline's D4 fluid, which does claim Matic-S compat.

Also, while Nissan claims the 7AT's fluid is "maintenance free" and never needs to be changed, that's a bunch of horse-****. At 21K miles my fluid looked terrible and definitely needed a change.
