Removing the shift knob
Just as the thread title says. Hey fellow members, I was attempting to remove the center console today, and this was the 1st time I've ever worked on a Nissan, its quite the jigg-saw puzzle. lol.
How do you go about removing the manual shift knob? I would think it would just be twisting it counterclockwise to remove it, which I tried, and it didnt work. So please someone help me out here. Thank you kindly. dee |

You have it right, twist counterclockwise, but it requires a good amount of force.
The threads have been dipped in loctite and screwed on very tight.

Why do you need to remove the shift knob to remove the console? The bezel & boot pop out as one piece. Then you just lift up and out. You can then access the screws to the console. Unless you plan on replacing the knob, just leave it alone. They put so much thread lock on the knob, that you will not be able to remove it without damaging it.

Dude, you dont even wanna know.... it was a complete disaster.. hahaha Lets just say my 1st mod didnt go soo well. And the Z wont be driven for atleast a week until I get a replacement switch blank, and start over, but the good thing is, I left everything unassembled. Im gonna take my time next time.

pop up the shifter console, drip the shifter shaft with a channel lock or pliers (I would use a rag around the teeth of the lock / pliers to not gouge the shifter), and hold it in place while twisting counter clockwise on the knob.
NOTE: you can actually damage the linkage to the trans by simply trying to unscrew and force the knob off without holding the shifter in place! |
