i just got my oil changed at a dealership and they put in 0w-20 and when i asked them about it they said that nissan recommends it and it is Mobil One Super Synthetic 0w-20 which is interchangeable with the 5w-30 ester oil the service manual says. its just not sitting right with me that 0w-20 is in my car when the owners manual says 5w-30 ester oil. will the 0w-20 mobil one super synthetic damage my motor in any way until my next oil change in 3k miles? and sorry about another oil thread, im new to this forum and tried the search engine but couldnt get it to work.

I'd do a web search and see if I could find out if Nissan says 0-20 is OK. Modern lubricants are pretty amazing so maybe it will work - but I have serious doubts.

Edit: Nissan no longer specs ester oil but many people have reported that it will quieten a noisy valvetrain.

Just had my oil change at the dealership yesterday and that is what they put in it too. From my records they changed to 0w-20 about 4 years ago. I have had no problem and I do track/drive the car hard.

Nissan switched to 0w-20 because it improves gas mileage by a teensy tiny bit, and thus helps them meet regulatory emissions goals. Lots of innovation in the past few years by the manufacturers with regards to tweaking oils and adding proprietary additives to help boost MPG.

That's why I stick to 5w-30 ester oil. The manufacturers are focused on MPG/emissions, not whether the oil is best for engine longevity.

Said it once, say it again: it is in the car makers' best interests if your car dies after the warranty expires.

Just remember, you can count on the dealership for one thing: to screw ya over.

Well said, that is why I try to do as much as I can myself. Cheaper and I know the work was done right. That being said there are just some things you have to visit you local dealer on because their not DIY friendly. Oh I remember the days that a tune up was plugs, points, condenser, timing adjust then adjust carburetor your done. But only for 10,000 miles and you had to do it all over again. Cars are better now a days...

Nissan designed the motor more than 10 years ago with 5w-30 oil. Unless they release the technical reasons for the 0w-20, I'd stick with the 5w-30

Dealers are plenty stupid. I had an Acura that called for 0W-20 (full synthetic and a little pricey). Manual said 5W-20 (semi-synthetic that is a lot cheaper) was ok as an interim oil if 0W-20 was not available but that you had to go back to 0W-20 on the next oil change.

Caught the dealer in a lie about the oil weight they use. They were doing 5W-20 on every oil change and charging the 0W-20 price. I was pretty sure this was the case, and I got photo evidence of it. Service manager was still a děck about it - instead of acknowledging my complaint he told me I shouldn't have been back there

Exactly! Dealers don’t give a **** about these sorts of details. I’m convinced that they use 0W20 in all Nissans for convenience sake. There never was any service bulletin regarding replacement of 5w30 with 0W20. And I can bet that for those of us with warranties, it will be voided if there ever is an engine issue possibly caused by using the wrong oil. I would replace the 0W20 immediately if I was the OP.

there is just a lot of dishonest practices in the auto repair business. I was told by numerous inside sources that it is very common that customers paid for serveries/repairs that were NOT done.

I personally had the bad experiences at the BMW and Lexus dealers. However, I wouldn't blame the manufactures, but rather the dishonest individuals....
