Default Throttle choking with left turn signal on

Hi guys,

Something very strange is happening and I wanted to see if any of you experience something like this before.

Some time ago (usually on hot days), my left turn signal would hyper blink when turned on and it would cause my throttle to choke as if it were cutting off my acceleration. If I put my foot down on the throttle when this happens, the engine will sputter and it will not accelerate. Almost as if valet mode was on. This will only happen with the left blinker on and hyper blinking. The first time this happened I thought my rear turn signal was faulty, but it worked again so I brushed it off. Soon I realized when the rear turn signal is not working, it also affects the acceleration.

The problem would go away after a few minutes of driving. The turn signal would work again and I can accelerate with the turn signal on. Until yesterday the problem did not go away and is still happening today. I am not able to accelerate with the left turn signal on and hyper blinking.

I can't imagine replacing the rear bulb would fix engine sputtering. What could possibly be happening?

Sounds like some sorta short.

I would make a dealer visit to have them look at it before that warranty expires.

Either that or your blinker fluid needs to be topped off.

Could be a Johnson rod failure.

I'm with Trips - sounds like a short or other wiring problem.

The fast blinking happens when the BCM detects high resistance in the lamp circuits, eg, a burnt out lamp. LED lamps, having a higher resistance than incandescents, can also trigger fast blink mode if a parallel resistor is not used.

Fast blink mode has nothing to do with engine management. I'd start looking at wiring connectors and harnesses that have both turn signal and engine wiring. A copy of the FSM, if you can find one, will help you determine where to look.

Edit: First thing I'd do is see if any DTCs are present. If you don't have a OBD tool, you can borrow/rent one at most auto parts stores. Some stores will even walk out to the parking lot and read the codes for you.

AutoZone will print you a slip with the translated codes and some of the more common solutions to common problems (with the hope that you purchase any needed parts from them)

Thanks for the suggestions. I will scan for any codes tonight after work. No SES so I didn't think to scan earlier. Anyways, I scheduled to bring into the dealer for next week

Results from dealer say there is a short coming from the driver side tail light harness. No warranty because of the EVO-R fourth brake light

They told me that Nissan is not allowed to repair the harness and can only replace it. The part is about $980 and they will charge me for 20-22 hours of labor at $205/hour. I told them that was crazy and that I was going to look into other options.

I paid for the inspection and left. Sad times

Get one of your buddies with some electrical experience to take a look at it. More than likely, it's an easy fix, eg, an insulated butt splice or three.

I already thought they were joking when they first told me how much the harness was... Then they told me about the labor...

In the dealer's defense, would you want one of the oil change monkeys trying to fix a wire harness?

It was a very easy fix for a buddy with electrical experience. He cut wires and soldered them back onto the connector. Fixed within an hour
