I had the same problem. A tooth on the plastic gear inside stripped.

I then took the gear out, used a two part glue to fill in the part where the tooth was missing and before it got hard, I used the counter gear to roll a profile of a gear tooth into it.

I left it overnight and then put back together.

Been ok for over 2 years now. Probably best not to slam the boot too hard.
