Rear Tone Ring # of teeth?
I just ordered a built diff from Z1. It has the LSD in it, and everything looks fine, but I was inspecting the parts on it, since it comes built in a used housing. I counted the teeth on the tone rings, and they are a different number on the right and left side axle stubs. The right side tone ring has 46 teeth, while the left side has 48 teeth. I counted the teeth on the stock diff that I pulled off the car, and it has 48 on each side. So The right side tone ring on the Z1 diff is clearly the wrong one, but would a two-tooth difference cause any issues? I don't mind if it's the wrong part as long as it doesn't cause problems with the ABS, VDC, or EBD systems. Anyone have any input? Thanks in advance!

Hmmmmmmm... I assume one is from a 350Z and one from a 370 maybe?
I'd call them up

Just to follow up on this thread, if it helps anybody... Yes, there IS a difference in tone rings used in these cars. The two I came across are 46 and 48 teeth on the tone rings. There may be more variations. But what I did was pop the axle stub off the diff and swap it with one of the axle stubs from my stock core so the diff going into the car has two 48-tooth tone rings. It works fine now, and there doesn't seem to be any problems with swapping it out. Here are pictures of the side of the tone ring where it has the number of teeth stamped into the metal.
So, just an FYI for anyone doing swaps, look for this number on the side of the tone rings and make sure they match before you complete your assembly. |
