I'm sure you'll find plenty of people who, from a financial perspective, came out ahead by having an extended warranty. You could be one of these people as well. These are the outliers though. On average, it will not save you money.

With that said, there are other intangibles, such as peace of mind, that an extended warranty provides. You just have to decide if that is worth the cost to you.

Covered my steering wheel lock failure, leaking power steering suction hose and TSB knocking noise from the rear axle. It has at the very least paid for itself.

I would and did on a used vehicle. Never really know what the previous owner did or didn't do.

Meh. Its insurance, that's it. Insurance companies are generally profitable for a reason.

The cost wasn't to bad on a 6/60 extension for our 2010...and I didn't use it once (time expired in 2016 at about 50K on the clock).

To me it was an acceptable cost on a slightly used Z where the top hydraulics and such I was a tad concerned with. The mechanics of the Z...not much concern really other then CSC which is hit/miss. SL is a fuse away from being a non-issue.

Whats amusing is a general trend I note where people buy extended warranties really seem to enjoy telling folks how much its 'saved' them...how they are 'up' on it.

IMHO, that tells me they bought a bad car.

Due to my job and driving a lot, I have purchased 3 extended warranties in the past few years on 3 different cars. The only one that I am ahead on is the 335d and that's more because the 335d is a lemon of an emissions system...

When I bought my 40th Anniversary, it was a year old and not knowing who the previous owner was, I bought a 5 year warranty. I did get some $$$ paid for the rear hatch mechanism that was not working all the time as well as the steering wheel lock replaced. Since the warranty expired last year, I decided to get another one for 4 more years. With all the possible issues with the CSC and other items, I thought that it MAY be worth it for me to get. Fortunately (or unfortunately), the car has been almost flawless and if I never get to use the extended warranty, the peace of mind I have is worth it (to me)...

When I put it up for the winter last year, I only had ~25K miles, so as the miles roll on, it may be something that pays for itself...only time will tell.

The CPO warranty paid for CSC failure & a new trans when my 5th gear syncro went out.

I'm glad as hell I had it.

I agree....just another form of insurance. Put the money in the stock market, that way you actually might make some money rather than throw it away.
