2014 Nismo with possible Synchro Rev issues in 5th gear
I bought my 2014 Nismo yesterday and I think Im experiencing an issue with the SRM in regards to 5th gear. Whenever I upshift from 4th to 5th the SRM revs the throttle to the point where it's a little too much rev for up shifting into 5th. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. I even thought I might be shifting too slow into 5th from 4th but the SRM will still rev the throttle if I upshift fast. No other gears do this when upshifting.
With SRM off there are no issues. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance Here is a video with the upshift into 5th and the SRM blipping the throttle 500rpm and then drops back down because it wasn't necessary http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps1cwurxqo.mp4 |

What is "a little too much?" A small blip on your tach? 100rpm?
Sounds like you're letting it sit in Neutral for too long. Anytime you pause between gears SRM preps at a nice "halfway" point since it doesn't know if you're going up or down. A nice, smooth motion keeps it in check. From my understanding, if SRM has a true issue, you will see it either 1. All the time in every gear change, or 2. Never, because it will just not function. |

http://www.the370z.com/48343-post24.html I've read that SRM will make the rpm hang for an upshift but it seems like it'll hang and then rev an additional 200-300 rpm or so |
Just got to work and noticed on the way it only happened once in probably 15 4th-5th up shifts.
|
Thats about on par with my experience. Over the months ive had to teach myself to stop thinking about it and just shift/clutch like normal.
At first i tried to shift "with" it if you know what i mean, but all l i seemed to do was confuse it, lol. Get into "oh my god this idiot is about to hit the 3 cars in front of me!!" mode, and see what i mean. It's flawless when you're driving by instinct. It is fun to brake to a stop with the clutch down and use it to blip the throttle tho :icon17: |
Now I noticed on my way home that sometimes even with a super slow upshift from 4th to 5th it WONT blip the throttle. Then sometimes when I upshift fast from 4th to 5th it'll still rev up an additional 500rpm

So you also get the additonal SRM blip in your 4th to 5th shift occasionally even if you believe that you shifted fast and normal? Do your other gears do it too? What's weird is for me it seems to happen only in the 4th to 5th upshift and no other gears |
I used SRM for about a week when I bought the car and haven't used it for years. I always would heel and toe myself and couldn't get out of the habit. Talk about confusing SRM when we were both trying to match revs.
|
i think its more of throttle response with driving habits.
synchrorev does not take account to you leaviing your foot on the pedal when you shift. revs jump when you're in neutral clutching in so... self explanatory |

this sounds more like you might be missing ever so slightly on the upshift and hit the mark the trigger point on the 3rd gear on the way to 5th if you can understand what i mean.

Make sure you are not hitting the gate for 3rd gear as you are making your 4th to 5th shift. This would trigger a pretty rowdy rev upwards of 5K depending on your speed at the time. |
Appreciate everyone's feedback. I've been driving stick for over 10 years so a part of me doesn't want to believe my shifting could be sloppy, but I'll be mindful of this and make very deliberate shifts now and report back.
Thanks again |
Found this post also with the same experience as mind in regards to the 4th-5th up shift
http://www.the370z.com/1613866-post6.html It might just be that I'm unknowingly getting close to 3rd on my way to 5th. Let's see... |
Dont stop on neutral when shifting to fifth shift it smoothly sliding to the right towards 5th. If you stop to neutral the SRM thinks your downshifting to 3rd.
|
Here's a video... This is clearly an Upshift into 5th with the SRM blipping the revs about 500rpm from 4k to 4500 and I feel it was a clean shift. WTF is up with this car?
It's at 14 seconds http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps1cwurxqo.mp4 |
I noticed it really only happens at higher rpm, over 4k. I'm dropping the car off at the dealer tomorrow
|
That does seem odd. I would definitely have the dealer check that out. GL :tiphat:
|
So ticked off... I stretched my budget to get this car and it's having issues already. My fear is I'll take it to a dealer and they won't be able to replicate the issue. I don't even feel like driving the car now...
|
just turn it off. honestly if yyou've been driving manual for over 10 years you dont really need a computer to get you a rev match down shifting or rev matching up shifting. its all driving habits.

Not enough information in that video to tell you what the problem is, but i have to ask.. Are you 100% sure you aren't leaving your foot ever so slightly on the gas even just a millisecond after you press the clutch pedal? You might be clutching just a little too soon. Our throttle is extremely sensitive and in true Nissan fashion it isn't a 1:1 ratio between pedal travel:throttle, at least for the first bit of pedal travel.
Or, your clutch sensor (just a button behind the pedal that sends either a Yes or No signal back to the ecu, doesn't measure clutch pedal position) might be picking up the second you put any amount of pressure on the clutch. Or, you could be triggering 3rd temporarily as previously posted. Of course, there's no way for us to know if it's user error or if maybe your shift linkage and/or gear sensor are slightly out of alignment. Let us know what the dealer says, and try to be patient. If you could only imagine the amount of work our cars do behind the scenes, you might be less irritated at one small hiccup and more awestruck at just how much functions properly and how many data calculations per second go into so many seemingly simple act of our daily lives. PS. I think these are boobs. :icon23: have a nice day. |
I beat you are getting close to 3rd and it thinks you are trying to downshift. I will hit it every now and then if I get sloppy. If you heal/toe it with it off, it is not an issue. It's just something to get used to. I still catch myself heal/toeing it with synchro rev match on. Oops. It doesn't affect it though. Funny how that is.

Thanks for the replies. So I did a test with with keeping a close eye on my shifts
- as soon as I got out of 4th and I moved the shifter up, very careful not to touch the gate of 3rd, and all the way to the right and up to 5th. Did this 20 times and it didn't happen once. I found that it's VERY VERY sensitive when I'm higher in the rpm compared to below 3k. Sensitive as in, I need to be extra careful when shifting at 4-5k RPM to absolutely not at all get anywhere near 3rd when I'm shifting up to 5th. This sensitivity isn't there below 4k. - but today it happened again even when I thought I was being careful...so it's just weird - if something is wrong with SRM wouldn't it affect all the gear gates and not just the 4-5 gear gate? I just think the 4-5 gear change is more sensitive than other upshift combos, as in, it'll rev to 3rd even when you THINK you had a clean shift. Anyone else feel the same? I know everyone's prob tired of this thread by now and my bitching but I appreciate everyone chiming in |
Happened again twice this morning with me being careful. Since tomorrow is Saturday I'm going to try to take a test drive with a Nissan tech. My only worry is the few places I called up aren't too familiar with the SRM systems.
I just feel that I'm concentrating and putting in way too much thought for a simple upshift. I don't think that's nor mal. Is ye 4-5 upshift that sensitive with srm on? |
Nothing like that has ever happened to me with SRM. I think something is confusing SRM somehow. I also don't think you are accidentally hitting the 3rd gear gate per your video. If you had hit the 3rd gear gate after being at 4K RPMs in 4th, I would expect SRM to be rev matching around 5500 RPMs, not just an extra 500 RPMs at 4500 or so.
Definitely take it to a dealer. Make them take you out to test drive other cars if they say it's normal. It's not. You have a brand new Nismo, right? No mods yet? |

Do you think this is a transmission issue or electronic? With SRM off, no issues at all. Is there any kind of SRM reset I can do on my own for the time being? Can I have a list of all sorts of issues it could possibly be? I can run this by the dealership, just because they're not too familiar with the SRM |

What I don't understand is why the 4-5 upshift occasionally and not the 2-3 upshift which is essentially the same positional upshift? Does each gate have it's own sensor?
|
In hindsight, it's funny how I made a thread on this exact same concern before I bought the car

Did you test drive the car before that thread? If not, that is eerie. You'll note that pretty much everyone said there are very few problems reported with SRM. This is not a common issue.

Went out for my lunch break and was able to hop on the highway for a bit so I figured it was a good time to test it out again. High RPM 4-5th gear changes (4k+ and even 6k a few times) and not a single hiccup and I was being very meticulous with making clean gear shifts with clean footwork. I just don't get what would cause this to happen sometimes and other times, not a thing.
|
Update #128:
Went for a nice morning drive on the highway testing this out. Making sure I shifted properly and cleanly, getting out of 4th and moving it up just enough to not disturb 3rd, and all the way to the right and up into 5th. Didn't happen once and I did a lot of them between 4-6k RPM. So now I'm more inclined to believe it's driver error but I'd still love for someone who knows this car inside to drive the car and confirm. JARblue: regarding your post about that blip not really being enough... I can replicate that situation all day everyday to that exact blip. Seems if the shifter merely kisses 3rd on its way to 5th it'll give a half blip but if I purposely full on touch the gate of 3rd it'll give a more rowdy rev that you were talking about. Can someone just confirm if the 4-5 Upshift is really THAT sensitive in regards to not mistakenly touching 3rd at all? |
Hrm... I don't think I've ever noticed a minimal rev like that. I'm going to try to replicate it this weekend. It does seem like maybe your 3rd gate is too sensitive, but I don't know enough about how it works to know if that's even feasible.
|
If you could replicate that in 4th gear at 4k that would be awesome. But just barely minimally touch the gate for 3rd while then going into 5th. Full on touching 3rd will give a rowdy blip, as is the case with mine too
|
This has happened to me before, only the first few minutes after a cold start in the winter when temperatures are really cold. When I say really cold, I mean to the point where the LEDs inside the car (gear indicator, stereo, etc) look like they're struggling to change because of how cold it is. It's not consistent though, other than the fact that I've never had this issue beyond the first few minutes on some isolated days.
I don't know enough to understand any logic as to why the above happens, but I thought I'd share that you aren't the only person this has happened to. |
Never had this issue with my Z. With the video you showed it does look like something is wrong with the sensor being to sensitive.
Tried to replicate this morning even if I shift slowly towards fifth with a pause at neutral did not get any blip on the throttle. Plus the sound of your rev upshift doesn't sound right. Or It could be just the audio of the video. |
