Trunk Modification
Hi,
With the "Arctic Vortex" (what the hell is this crap anyway..I'm 64 and have never heard of an "Artic Vortex" before........I think the whole thing is a plot to get us to accept higher gas, oil and fuel rates!!?$#) I braved extruding the "toy" from its hybernation, been out a week, but top down only once (it used to be nice in the end of April....but that's probably a story best suited for a different forum!?). I'm really thinking that this should be my last winter up here (as in going south....not pushing up daisy's) and got looking at the trunk to see how much **** I could take south next year....that little sucker is huge without all that foam crap which houses nothing but a can of sealant, a hook and a small air pump! All that stuff could be easily stored in a side cubby hole in the trunk...or in the car for that matter. Has anyone seen any conversion kits available....I'm thinking carpet inserts that sort of thing? I've tried searching for it on this site but confess to being totally baffled with the search function.....I think my first computer game was "pong" and it was a bitch.........so be kind! Any suggestions or direction would be appreciated. Regards, Paul |
I agree when you take out the spare (if you have one) and the styro-foam - there is a lot of space. I think I saw a post a while back that showed how someone retrofitted the space.
Can't find it tho... |
No kit I am aware of but any stereo shop should be able to handle modification to the trunk with removable panels to store stuff underneath.

Paul,
I haven't done it, but I will encourage you to lead the way. Someone has to break trail. And by all means take pictures. Prior to this Z, my wife and I took our vacations (5000miles min, or it doesn't count) on a touring motorcycle. She had the left side bag, I had the right, including minimal tools. We shared the tour trunk - mostly camera gear, computer, and stuff like that. Moving to the Z, as is, was luxury. Thing is, after 20+ years of touring, we still take about the same stuff, so the Z Roadster's trunk it pretty large. If someone (you?) comes up with a way to make it larger, well, gravy. |
Some good advice and ideas, thank you! Think I will try and find a trim shop this summer and see if I can get a carpet insert made for the "bare" trunk. The air pump and tow hook can be stored in the car and the tire sealant cylinder can be velcro'd into the "new" trunk somewhere. The raw metal underneath the existing foam insert can be sprayed with "Rino liner" or something, and with the carpet over it the little sucker should be almost the size of the trunk in a '70's LTD!#? Now all I need is a place in Florida and a 30 year old blond with poor eyesight!#$% :happydance:
