I have you seen someone trying to put their top up while driving? The top becomes a sail like on a boat. :shakes head: Common sense is to pull over or do it at a complete stop, And then either raise or lower the top. If you are still trying to do this You'd have to bypass the safety device which is probably a speed sensor of sort? That once disconnected would allow you to raise or lower your top at any speed. I strongly advise against it. |
What Trips said.
Try this little experiment: With the top down, get up to cruising speed (55-65 mph). Stick your hand up into the airstream, palm toward your direction of travel. Multiply that force by 100 (the area of the roof is about 100 times the area of your hand, give or take) and that will give you an idea of the forces involved. |
Thank guys for advice's... But surely I am not planing to drive 100km/h and get roof down/up. I get anoyed when I need to STOP and get it down or up... 20-30km/h is reasonable speed for roof to get up/down. And on other cars you can get roof up or down by I think max 40km/h. Where is that sensor located?

This is a very bad disaster waiting to happen, and a terribly bad idea. If the car roof is not designed to be operated when in motion, you shouldn't be doing it.
Besides, how often do you decide mid-drive that you want to change the orientation, and pulling over into a parking lot or side street is too much hassle? |
I would start working on the excuse to give to the dealer when trying to get it fixed.
How about this one..."Honestly, I don't know what happened. My brakes failed :eekdance: and I thought I would raise the roof and use it as a parachute. I was only doing 50 mph. All of a sudden, it was gone . Have you seen this before, Mr. dealer?. What do you mean it's not covered under warranty :wtf:" How's that sound... |

Smart top
There is a mod that you can do called smart top that will let you set a max speed that you can be moving and still operate the top. Personally, with all of the problems that can pop up with the vert tops I would not do this while under warranty. Very appealing mod.

It is not a question of being lazy, but a question of safety and convenience. Not only is it a PITA to sit and hold the button for 20 seconds while the top retracts, but it is a distraction while you are sitting there in gear. Yes, you could move it to neutral, but again is the brake on or off, are you rolling, are people waiting for your space so cars are collecting around you.
Now, think about driving... you have the top down, sprinkles start on the windshield, your at a light. Do you start to put the top up. I don't, I wait for the light to change and then pull over to the side of the road, put the top up and then merge back into traffic. Wouldn't it be safer to just start the top going up, if the light changes you move forward at 20 to 25 mph while the top completes it movement. I know it 6 of 1 and 1/2 dozen of the other, but just because it convenient does not mean your lazy. This module also leads the way to other mods, like a rain sensor to put your top up with the car off and unattended. I have had verts for the past 40 years or so, this is the first one where you had to be at a complete stop to put the top up. Never had a problem with any of the others so I would not expect this one to be any different. Regards and just my .02 worth on at least having the option, YMMV, Jim |
This is one of two things that sucks about the zr. One is no oem one push up down. Two is no operation while going less then 20 mph.
At those speeds there is no sail effect. More then a few other verts operate like this. Most in fact as any review will tell you the speed limits to operate it. I start my car and back out of my garage. If this worked I could have top up or down by the time I hit my street going all of 10 mph. I don't waste 20s of idling and the fuel. May sound silly but it's not IMHO. The smart top is a very tempting mod but I may not have the zr past a few more years so I am holding off. - b |
The smart top chip does NOT allow you to operate the top past 20 mph, and you can set the speed limit by programming the chip. Ive operated the top many times during bumper to bumper traffic without having to stop so its worth the money. Plus you can operate the top with your keypad which just makes all the ladies drop their panties. Fave mod for the z.

I absolutely love the SmartTop. I can start to close or open the top when pulling into the driveway. Also, the one touch button and keyfob function is great.
However, I thought I read somewhere that the max speed to operate the top is the speed at which you can start the process. This means you can start opening the top at say 12 mph and floor it and it should keep operating. I have never and will never try this. I have used it while leaving a parking spot and driving through a parking lot. |
