Another Roadster top issue :(

Well. I had my 370z roadster for about a month now. (whole 2000 miles on it)

Now it is back at the dealership due to top issue.

Stitching on the conv top has poped and ripped

The conv top is hitting the conv top compartment when it is folding away.

AND there is sometime of rip near the stitching that is ripping.

This is second time car has been in the dealership for the top hitting and supposedly they fixed it but just came back.

Anyone had or have the same issue?

Thank you

Roadster4Us 08-02-2011 11:50 AM

Where exactly is it hitting? Do you have any pics?

Kirkster 08-02-2011 01:06 PM

You are definitely the first person that I have heard that is having problems with the top coming apart at the seams.

A lot of us have slight discoloration behind the doors where the top folds. I had this occurring but it has not gotten worse in the last 9 months.

I have had the top hit the compartment cover once or twice in the last year but have not been able to replicate it for anyone let alone the dealership.

Nissan USSA should make this right. If the dealership is not cutting it for you I would call Nissan USSA.

ej257gd 08-02-2011 06:28 PM

I can replicate the compartment cover hitting the conv top every time.

I was just told. They are going to replace the top and while they are doing that, they are going to see why it is hitting.

Wish me luck...

BeachZTT 08-02-2011 08:06 PM

Best of luck for sure. Hope they get it sorted out for you soon!

Articwing 08-09-2011 10:44 AM

I just got my roadster 2 days ago, have the same problem, have to take it back to the dealership:(

ej257gd 08-09-2011 01:10 PM

I droped my car at the Irvine nissan. They are going to replace the top part due to torn stiching and going to make adjustment so, they can fix the hitting issue.

Service advisor told me it will take only 1 day. (since they are not paying for my rental, which I think is little bit weird since car has 3000 miles on it and I bought it from that dealership. Plus this is third time I brought the car in for the same issue)

Also, on top of all the other issues, my alignment was horribly off in the front from the factory and my front tires out side is toast evenly on left and right side. (I told them about possible alignment issue before but they ignored it and now it is gonna cost me 400 to 600 for new front tires)

Well, I don't really know if Nissan Corp is that horrible in service or Irvine Nissan and Service Manager. Just gotta wait and see. Hope they do right but who knows...

If they don't fix my issue this time around, I qualify for CA lemon law thingy and will be hiring a lawyer to lemon the car. (But I hope it doesn't come to that.)

Keep you updated.

ej257gd 08-10-2011 10:33 AM

Here is a update.

So they will have my car until thursday now. (Originaly suppose to be 1 day)
I guess Regional mgr and Lead tech felt, it would be better if upholstery shop installs the new top (Crossing my fingers on that one)

And I guess my front alignment was off from factory. Now my front tires are toast and my service writer is trying to get replacement tire from Nissan. :(```

I usually have back luck with every new car I purchased but this one might top the take.

Roadster4Us 08-10-2011 11:35 AM

Depends on how you look at it. Sounds like you have a decent dealer that is working to fix the issues. That's always a good thing.

Agreed. Also, I'm sure you're already doing this, but make sure you keep all documentation when bringing your car in. Just in case you need to escalate to corporate...

BeachZTT 08-10-2011 08:39 PM

Hope everything works out. I personally think you are better off with an experienced upholstry shop working on the top than the techs at the dealership that have never touched a top frame/mechanism. The "craftsman" that did my friends Packard Roadster top was an absolute magician!

http://www.the370z.com/members/beach...ng-packard.jpg

Friend of mine pre ordered a 350Z before they released. He had issues with the front alignment from the factory and the dealership here replaced both his front tires if I remember correctly. No reason for a car with under 3k on it to ruin a tire.

Best of luck! :tiphat:

Up here in my neck of the woods the dealer replaced the top. The service manager told me Nissan allows 7 hours for top replacement and is done in-house because Nissan does not contract out their warranty work. True or not, his tech did a good job on the replacement.

BeachZTT 08-11-2011 10:02 AM

Well, that is certainly good to hear!

I think I would trust my tech if he thought he could do it... but I have known him for about 11 years. He has a 1961 Datsun pickup that belongs in a museum. I will attach a shot this evening.

ej257gd 08-11-2011 10:31 AM

I should hear something today from the dealership.....

I hope they do a good job. I really hope Nissan replaces the front tires...

I'll keep everyone updated and takes some pictures of the after work done.

New Update 08-11-11

The car will not be ready until tomorrow now...
I guess the car upholster shop is having difficulty and asking for more time...
I have a feeling I am gonna be stuck with my rental car until next week at this point.
(Time for me to start calling around for a lemon law attorney)

I know our Nissan Warranty does not have a ded but with the rental car fees racking up. It sure feels like a ded is applied when I bring the car in for warranty work.

Plus.

I need to drop by again next Thursday for the alignment issue. I guess Nissan Regional person would like to see it the alignment being off in person..
With how worn out tires are in the front, not sure I will even last until next Thursday.

Issues Issues Issues..

BeachZTT 08-11-2011 05:33 PM

Very sorry to hear. Hope they get you sorted out soon.

I have to tell you that I am not an "extended warranty" person but I bought one on this car because of potential issues with the top. I knew some people had issues and I was willing to take the chance but didn't want to worry aobut what may happen if the dealership had my car for a week... or longer.

I also think the "allignment in person" thing is BS. It does not take a rocket scientist to read numbers off of the allignment sheet and know you are going to have problems! If the tires have abnormal wear in that few miles and need replaced, it is clear there is a problem. You should have a copy of that alignment sheet in your hand from the original tech that read the existing settings and pictures of the tire wear for future reference. Camber can be detrimental but incorrect toe will chew up a set of tires in no time because the tires are constantly abrading.

I wish you the best! Please keep us informed of your progress.

Here is the shot of my tech's '61 pickup that I mentioned previously....

ej257gd 08-11-2011 05:57 PM

I am not really impressed with Nissan Corp or Irvine Nissan at this point.
Both of them seems to not have any common sense, when it comes to treating customers....

I totally agree on the alignment...
Alignment was off from the factory. It chewed up my tires. within 3000 miles.
A. Put the alignemtn back to factory spec. Give me new tires
B. Put the alignemtn back to factory spec. Give me the middle fingers on the tire replacement.

Atleast this way, they won't wast any more of my time.

But again, they are trying. I guess regional service person came down today in person to look at the alignment issue but car was still at upholstery shop.

My bigger worry is. This shop had the car since tuesday.. And they still haven't figured how to put on a new top.. Doesn't seem right... (Only suppose to take 7 hours on the book)

I will keep everyone updated.

BeachZTT 08-11-2011 06:09 PM

Have you read through this thread? A little information on what others have faced. May be something helpful in there. http://www.the370z.com/nissan-370z-r...h-america.html

ej257gd 08-11-2011 06:16 PM

Thank you. I will read it..

Upside is. I lemoned a STI before, I know the whole procedure. It wasn't that difficult to do. Plus in CA, the MFG has to pay for the attorney fees and expenses. Which is another upside.

Daveski38 08-12-2011 08:42 AM

ej,

Sounds like the stealership is playing you. I went through something simular a year ago.

We had the car in the driveway for 27 days and the dealership had it for 27 days. During that time they would call me up and say it ready and come get it. Two of those times I returned it the same day because it wasn't fixed.

Last time I picked it up only had it at the house for 2 days and that was only because the second day was Sunday. The hydroilic's blew on the roof this time and I had had enough.

I took the day off on Monday morning and took it back in. Service department told me what had happened to the roof. I scheduled an appointment with the General manager that day and pled my case never raising my voice. One of the things I told him was that we loved the car.....but not that car!

Filed a formal complaint with Nissan that same day. The following Monday we drove off the lot in a new ZR. Didn't cost me a dime out of pocket and haven't had a problem since.

During that time I never had to pay for rental, even in the beginning. When I met with the Manager he ask about the rental. My wife said "O-Please" that was all it took and he pulled a new car off of his lot for us to drive.

Hats off to Nissan Corp. and my Dealership. Sounds to me like you need to go up the ladder a little more. You shouldn't be paying for the rental and Nissan has been known to compensate you for your troubles.

Good luck with your repairs...but step up to the plate a little closer.

ej257gd 08-12-2011 10:44 AM

I think one of my biggest issue regarding rental reimb etc etc etc is. Service Dept Manager, My service writer (@ Irvine Nissan) and Regional Tech person...
They might be good and straight forward on warranty work but have no common sense regarding customer service..
If I don't get my car back today and fixed correctly.. I will be contact Nissan Corp and General Manager...

But will see..... I should know something today...

ej257gd 08-12-2011 12:31 PM

Does anyone know the contact information for the nissan corp for warranty issue?

Update..

My car is ready. I was advised. Not to open the roof for a week. (Something about fabric has to be really stretched for a week or two...

Well, I go back next Thursday for the alignment issue and hopefully tire get replaced.

I'll keep everyone updated.

BeachZTT 08-12-2011 07:08 PM

Sweet! I think I would take it back and let them open it the first time. Just in case it went off like a jack in the box.

ej257gd 08-12-2011 07:19 PM

ding ding ding :)

When I go back on Thursday. I am gonna have them open it and close it...

I don't want to be stuck somewhere not being able to close the roof. I hope looks ok..

gr8-wrx 08-12-2011 07:37 PM

Not that it probably matters, but what year is your car, ej257gd?

ej257gd 08-12-2011 07:38 PM

2010

IDZRVIT 08-13-2011 09:13 AM

When my top was replaced there was no mention of keeping the top closed for a week to stretch. Just sayin'.

ej257gd 08-13-2011 02:13 PM

Another Update 8/13/11

I went in to the dealership to pick up the car this morning. Top looks like it was installed properly but can not tell until they try to open and close the top thursday.

Unfortunately, tires are so worn out. It doesn't seem safe to drive the car specially until thursday.

I get I am stuck with the rental until then.

Spoke to general mgr he will talk to service mgr and help me out. Crossing my fingers..

Daveski38 08-15-2011 07:23 AM

Good Luck ej hope it all works out!

ej257gd 08-15-2011 01:50 PM

I hope so too..

I am suppose to get a call back from the MGR's today. but we will see..

on the lighter side...

I thought it would be hell driving a Kia Forte but man. Not a bad little car...

spacious. (I am 6'2 and 200 lbs)

Handles pretty well..

Has lot of gadgets.. not bad...

Kia has come a long way..

ej257gd 08-22-2011 11:11 AM

08-22-11 Update.

I got the car back sat.

4 new tires and alignment courtesy of Nissan NA.

Irvine Nissan paid 3 out of 11 days of rental. (Better then nothing)

Top wise.. It looks better then when it was new but I can't open it for few more weeks supposedly it won't close right now because fabric is too tight and has to loosen up...

I am gonna leave it alone for a week or two and see how it goes. (atleast they will pay for the rental, if it doesn't work perfectly by the time I bring it back...)

Daveski38 08-22-2011 11:35 AM

Good to hear EJ.

Give us an update in a couple of weeks!

Very Glad to hear things went well! Yes, follow their instructions. Let us know how things end up.

Ya know, that's just nonsense. I've had my new top now for over over a month and from the first day of install, I've opened/closed the top almost daily without issue. I did ask my tech about stretching and 'break-in' and he said go ahead and use it. Guess he was right.
