Windows Frozen?!?
 

Any suggestions? :eekdance: My windows were frozen shut again this morning, which of course means you have to pry the door open in order to get into the car because the window can't come down like it normally does. And then of course you can't close the door because the window is still up and will hit the roof, after a few minutes with the heat on it's fine but I'm sure that can't be good for roof, windows, etc. Do you guys have any suggestions to prevent the windows from freezing? I try not to just buy any can of spray on magic cure-all they sell in the store with out looking into it first but it seems some deicer is probably my best bet? Is there any downside or reason I shouldn't use it, or limit it to emergency's, etc? Could it corrode the seals or hurt the paint or anything like that?

Otherwise I guess my plan is to pick up a few cans and spay it on the bottom edge of the window and work it into the seal so hopefully it won't freeze in the first place and I won't need to spay it every morning to get into the damn car. :shakes head:

if you get that de0icer on the rubber seal it will start to break it down. That will not be good.

****! that's what I was afraid of, I stopped at the store to see what they had and got some frost preventive stuff or some such nonsense I forget exactly what it was called but it's some prestone stuff in a yellow spray bottle.

It says to use it on your wipers (I didn't) but hopefully that means it should be safe on rubber? We'll see if it does anything tomorrow morning but I sprayed on just the bottom of the window, it definitely got on the ruber also though. I tried to clean off whatever wasn't going to affect the window freezing

It is probably freezing at the top of the window also... or at least that is what mine does sometimes

I pour a cup of Warm water on the top and it'll do fine.

I was going to suggest this. Should work fine but you might need a little more than just a cup. Get a plastic water bottle and fill it so you can spray it up at the seal.

I thought about that, but it does not seem to be. At least not yet, so for now i only put the stuff where I thought I needed it... to keep potential side effects to a minimum, just in case

thanks guys, water was of course one of my first thoughts but I was looking or a more permanent solution. Well semi-permanent at least, I don't want to be heating water and pouring it on my car... every morning :eekdance:

Nobody else is having this problem? If that's the case I guess I should head to the dealer

Do that enough times & I guarantee your glass will shatter. Thats a big no no. I lived in Buffalo a few years and have seen people shatter their windshield like this. Any rapid temperature change will cause the glass to expand or contract.

OP, let the window down a bit. Enough so there is no gap when you close the door, but not to the point where the glass completely overlaps the seal.

good point, I always forget about shattering the glass. It's never happened to me, but I also don't think I've ever poured water on my car. Closest thing was washing my truck in the winter :rofl2:

Keeping the window down a little was my original plan but the overlap seemed so small I didn't think I could lower it enough to prevent getting stuck while still having it up enough to actually keep out the weather. Guess I'll look at it more closely tomorrow.

Anyone tried silicone spray or WD-40 on the rubber seals?

It wasn't cold enough this morning for frost... it was so damn hit in my house I think I may have been warming up the outside as well :rofl2:

Anyway this prestone frost stuff will probably work, it leaves a film on my window, which streaks every time I open it, no matter how often I clean it :eekdance: So it will probably work, but I'm not sure I would recommend it, we'll see

A mechanic friend of mine had a can of window seal lubricant/dressing a year or so ago that he sprayed on my Xterra seals. I don't know if it would help with freezing but I will try and find out what it was. Oh, I found what he had... 3M Window channel lubricant and dressing: 3M Automotive Aftermarket : Lubricants & Sealants

If you have a 7AT, I would seriously consider a remote start for a DD parked outside. If not, someone just posted instructions and diagram for remote starting the 6M. I personally would be reluctant to do that... as scatterbrained as I am, I can see remote starting the car through the front of the garage. I don't know if his method would prevent that because I didn't look at the post that closely.

Someone here already had a 6Sp with a Remote start installed by the dealer. Lets just say it didn't end well.

The bigger question is why are you driving a roadster in the winter :eek:

No scientific proof for these readily avalable home products .. but worth a try if you aint got any those premade stuff

Helpful Hints For Winter

Keep your headlights clear with car wax! Just wipe ordinary car wax on your headlights. It contains special water repellents that will prevent that messy winter grime accumulating on your headlights - lasts 6 weeks.




Prevent car doors from freezing shut with cooking spray! Spritz cooking oil on the rubber seals around car doors & rub it in with a paper towel. The cooking spray prevents water from melting into the rubber


Fog-proof your windshield with shaving cream! Spray some shaving cream on the inside of your windshield & wipe if off with paper towels. Shaving cream has many of the same ingredients found in commercial defoggers.


De-ice your lock in seconds with hand sanitizer! Just put some hand sanitizer gel on the key & the lock & the problems solved!

Haha I used some of those tricks before. Grew up outside for Regina Sk then Edmonton for ~10yrs so I know what cold and snow is really well lol...

Been about 3 weeks now since I stored the Z I do miss the drive but way the roads are out here with the gravel I would miss my paint job more :rolleyes:

Yeah, I read that thread... first stop on the way home from picking it up if I recall. Major fail!

:facepalm: Well my window, as well as my door handle and even the lock button were frozen this morning. I don't know if that anti-freeze **** I tried just didn't work or if all the damn rain washed it away, it does say your supposed to spray it on every night :shakes head:

Guess I'll just keep going down the list here and see what works :eekdance:

Upon further inspection I just noticed the rubber seal along the bottom of the window, with the felt or what ever it is on the other side, is not even touching the window. That is supposed to be there to keep debris out of the door right, obviously mine would not be doing it's job then and it would allow water, as well as anything else, to get in there and freeze, explaining my problem I think. Is this unique to my car, I assume it is, but would some of you guys be willing to go look at yours and see how bad it is. The drivers side has much more of a gap then the passengers, I pushed it in with my finger and it looks better now but I'm sure that is just temporary and either way it's still not really "sealed" if you will.

Update, if anyone is interested. It was 20 degrees and snowy this morning, and I could get into my car. We'll see how things progress but it looks promising, so far.

:facepalm Well my windows still haven't frozen again, yet. They were pretty sluggish this morning though. But I did get to find out the hard way that you can open the roof by holding the lock button...

This seems like an even more useless feature then being able to open the windows with the key (I can see some benefit there) You can imagine how great that sounded at 5:00 when my icy frozen roof was desperately trying to pry itself open :shakes head:
