OBD stands for on board diagnostics. The reader plugs into your cars computer and will read any codes. It also let's you reset the check engine light and could save you a trip to the dealer. Very easy to use.

I had this happen to me 3 days ago it turned on. Im curious as too how many miles are on your Z? I only ask because I have never had this problem before I just recently had brand new oem primary and secondary o2 sensors installed and I am not sure the cause.

It was the first time I put gas into her; I had her about 6 weeks; it happened 9 days after that; maybe around 400 miles or so? The second time it happened was 2 days after I put gas into her; I have around 1,000 miles on her now; I'll need to get gas in the next day or so, but I should be getting a phone call today or tomorrow about the new gas cap being in....I'll post again after that.

Wow I am sorry to hear that it happened that new. I have a bad feeling they are going to attribute mine to mods if its not the gas cap. Wel I hope everything goes well and they don't give you the run around!

Default Service Engine Soon

I am having the same problem now...I have taken my 370Z Roadster in once and two weeks later the light has come back on. It wll be back in this week. It came back on a few days after I filled the tank. This is getting irritating and taking the fun out of having the car. I have only had it a month. Like you, I know how to put a gas cap on. Putting a gas cap on should be a mindless event. If there is some special way that is required then I have my first recommendation for an improvement for the 2011 models. Put gas in, screw on the cap, and drive it like you stole it. Should be that simple...Not, line up slots, twist on, ensure three clicks, make a sign of the cross and envoke God's name in hopes the "Service Engine Soon" light does not reappear....grrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Good Morning Merlin,

I almost hate to say anything, because I'm afraid to jinx it, but it's been 10 days since I last filled up and so far the light has not come on. Dealership hasn't called me on my new gas cap yet, so this is the originial one. This probably doesn't mean a thing, but when I put the gas cap back on, I made sure the wording on there was straight up and down, you know, instead of sideways or upside down; figured what the heck, I might as well try it! LOL....I've been doing the same thing everytime I fill up....PRAYING! Go figure, now that a new gas cap has been ordered, the light isn't coming on, YET!

After 6 months I have 1200 miles on my roadster (traded in my 2009 coupe for it). At about 1000 miles my "check engine soon" light came on. Brought the car in for my first oil change and the service advisor said I would have to leave the car all day to find out the problem. I couldn't wait so I only had the oil change. Made an appointment today for the "light" problem and the service writer said it should only take about an hour and I can wait for the car

Do these people know what they are doing and do they talk to one another?

(sorry for the long post)

Default Service Engine Soon

The dealership fixed the issue for the second time and dealt with my ire. This time they spoke at length with the Nissan techs. The Nissan techs admited that the "service engine soon" light is a known issue associtaed with a lose gas cap. It codes as a slight evap leak. The probelm is with the gas cap not being properly secured. Nissan recommends "not" pushing in on the cap when closing it. They recommend simply inserting the gas cap, twisting right and ensuring it cicks at least three times. Then they recommend pulling on the little plastic retainer strap to ensure it is secure and does not pop off. They also said there was some sort of warning under the gas access panel on 2009 models about this, but I have no idea. So essentially a gas cap design is the culprit for this issue.

My "service engine soon" light just came around 1800 miles. I'm taking the car in this Saturday to see what it is. I hope it's just the gas cap.

Default Gas Cap

My issue was caused by a faulty gas cap. It took three visits to the dealership to have this resolved...

Default Gas Cap

I've been fortunate and hope that I don't jinx anything here....LOL...but after my Nissan FINALLY ordered a new gas cap and I had to wait FOREVER for it, all of a sudden I stopped having problems....go figure! I make sure I don't push the cap really hard when putting it back on and for some reason, which may not having anything to do with anything, I make sure the writing on the cap is straight up and down and haven't had an issue since. I still pray everytime I get gas though..... :-)
Other than that, I have been loving my Z....what a beautiful car she is! And the weather here in GA has finally cooled down enough that in the afternoons it is perfect weather to ride with the top down. Sometimes I feel like I could keep going and going and enjoy the ride. God, I love this car! :-)
