Convertible top safety bypass
I was reading about bypassing the safety features on the navigation unit so you can add a destination while driving and watch DVDs. You do this by grounding the parking break and interrupting the speed signal to the unit.
That got me thinking could you do the same for the power soft top? Interrupt the break and reverse signals so you can drop the top while backing out of the driveway and maybe bypass the speed sensor so you can open or close it while moving. The Porsche Boxter can operate its top up to about 30mph without damage so I am pretty sure our Zs would be safe to maybe 20mph. Anybody with more electronics experience than me have any thoughts? |
Seems like a bad idea. The top doesn't function while in reverse to keep you from backing without being able to see.
Also, on what are you basing your assertion that the top could work while driving 20mph? What if it's only good until 10mph or 5mph? Are you willing to blow yours off your car to test its limits? |
I wouldn't risk it. The Porsche is most likely reinforced and thats why its good to 30mph, our Zs weren't designed with that type of operation in mind
|
I saw a jag the other day in traffic going about 10 mph and it was about to rain and he closed it while moving. That seems like a reasonable speed, and pretty useful for you if you cant pull over and about to drive into rain or something?
|
The manual said you could go 3mph and put the top up/down but it doesn't work for me...
|
Well, in the end I can't find anything about where the soft top control unit is or what wires I would need to modify. Maybe something will surface after the cars have been out a little longer.

Yep operating this roadster's top seems a bit of trial and error for me now despite religiously reading the manual. I did notice it does pull a lot of battery juice ( hence the warnings in the manual) and your battery gotta be in good shape or well charged. Had the misfortune today of needing to boost my roadster as I inadvertantly left the radio and seats air pump on without switching the "Intelligent button ??!!) to off when I left my car to go to work! Modern technology huh ! and my last Nissan is 14 years old
I wouldnt dream of messing around with the circuit >>> would probably void my extended waranty. |
Get a smart top modual to work with your fob,I have mine set for 25 ks an hour,or use the cockpit button one touch forward or back,it is the best mod i have added.
