Is nissan done with the roadster or will the 400Z come in convertible

I think the language used in this article makes it pretty clear there will never be another Z roadster.

I’m not sure about the convertible
Nissan is still on the hook for the issues there having with the current convertible
And murano convertible. I’m not sure while Nisssn wants to do that again

A new generation of Z roadster would require Nissan to make a functional convertible top without the potential for catastrophic mechanical failure, and I’m not sure that is something they’re capable of.

If you read carefully the article I linked, the language that they used makes it pretty clear they are not interested in doing a Roadster anymore. Look, the Roadster sold small numbers of an already limited production car. This is going to be even more limited with Europe being axed.

Nissan is a financially challenged company, clearly reusing as much as they could from the 370Z. Developing a convertible model of the new Z is going to be expensive. Look, the existing 370Z Roadster had 0 development costs to maintain production, they just had to build them and sell them, and even Nissan was no longer interested, yet alone to spend big money to develop a new one.

Which leads me to my final point. This isn't 2009 anymore, it's 2020 and the new Corvette is a hardtop convertible, the Mazda MX-5 has morphed into a hardtop convertible at well below the price point of the 370Z roadster.

A soft top convertible for a car well north of 40k isn't competitive anymore. I am sure Nissan knows this as well. A new generation Roadster that costs 50k+ would have to be a hardtop ala the Mazda MX-5 RF or the C8 Corvette convertible to sell in any decent numbers that would make it worth even producing.

But that's a catch-22 for Nissan. Do you know how much it would cost them to develop a hardtop retractable roof. It's probably not possible either, because the new Z is the old 370Z chassis; a chassis never initially conceived or designed for a hard-top retractable roof. Once again, for a company in financial distress, reusing 370Z door panels, it's clearly not possible.

For those with 370Z Roadsters; take care of them, because they are the end of the line.

That doesn’t even contribute a 1% of Nissan sales but on the other side of the spectrum it is the most costly repair. When the convertible breaks they replace everything which cost upwards of 15k and it’s not cost effective in terms of sales.
Carlos Gomes wanted to eliminate all waste. Which means 370Z, juke, cube anything that’s a niche or poor sales. I think his philosophy still stands cause you will see many models in Nissan and Infiniti share.
The roadster will come again but not anytime soon or may not be on a 370Z platform

You guys make some very compelling arguments about why we're unlikely to see a 400Z convertible. I think you could well be right.

But at the same time, lots of people were speculating the new Z would be a shooting brake, or electric, or that there would not be a manual transmission offered, or that there wouldn't even be a new Z at all. It's really impossible to predict for sure what Nissan's going to do.

Yes you are very correct. Also while there is for sure a market for pricey hard-top spiders, I don't think there is a market for soft top convertibles north of 30k anymore.

I know the Miata has a lot less power, but honestly given the choice if I really wanted a new 2021 convertible, I'd take a hard top retractable roof MX-5 over a soft top Z and save 10 grand doing so.

If Nissan wants consumers to shell out 50k for a new-generation Z Roadster, it's not going to happen with a cloth top.

I Paid 26k for it and it had 9k on it and never played so it officially went for a new car. I so careful with the top that I leave it open 24/7 in fear something might break. Lol

I would think that due to the current market, I would not expect to see a drop-top on the upcoming Zed line-up. I understand that the 370 Roadster was designed to be a convertible, so it turned out pretty decent. I don't think they have gone down the same road with the new model, or at least I have not read anything about it.

I think it really depends on whether the new Z will have a roadster model (doubtful). If not, then ya then 19s and 20s (Canada and Australia got a few 20s) would be the end, forever, and they sold very few of them.

Considering that there aren't many convertibles anymore, and strictly 2 seaters, the 370Z finds itself sandwiched between the Miata and the Corvette unless I am mistaken?

Does anyone know of a cheaper 2 seater besides the Miata and I'm pretty sure the next most expensive thing after the 370Z price point is the Corvette?

Yes, take care of your car. Don't leave it outside. Garage it. I think it's better to run the top up and down occasionally. Letting things sit unused is the best way to let them deteriorate.

Ok, not sure how reliable this is, but according to a Japanese site instead of a roadster, there may be a t-top model but it won't be available at launch.

If true, it's a wonderful idea from Nissan to bring this back from the Z32; it's simple, no breakdowns and no warranty headaches for them (via Google translate so I don't think electrified is the proper word there, probably means something closer to reinforced):
