Roadster Top problems - Nissan Corporate wants you to call in and open case

If this is the only option we have, Ill pass and just put up with nudging the top forward as the lid opens rather than risk any leaks and the eye sore of a bad fit. Comon Nissan!!!

They told me mine was 1 of 2 first cars this was installed in. When I complained about the trim the tech told me the engineer was onsite and was helping him install. The engineer reviewed the results and told the tech that there is nothing else they can do. They blamed it on the fact that my car is 2014 and already 5 years old. And also since they put in new roof last year (and I've been waiting for the bungee fix since), I'm now out of parts warranty on the new roof. They said to call nissan consumer affairs if I'd like but there is nothing else the dealer can do. I called nissan, waiting on call back.

Also my concern is not just the bad fit and the trim. I can tell from looking at the top of the roof, that the bungee is squeezing the roof very hard, which I think is causing the trim to curl up and get pushed out. This makes me wonder if it will cause mechanics of the roof to fail after some time.

Vman12.......I am really sorry this is happening to you and it seems like classic Nissan Dealer behavior (based on my many terrible experiences with them before selling my Z). I highly recommend that you lawyer up as you have well documented proof that this issue existed during the warranty period and all "fixes" by Nissan have not been effective and have even made the problem worse. The second a capable warranty/lemon law attorney reaches out to them they will push for a generous settlement very quickly, trust me.

Standard Nissan Protocol with Convertible Tops

Step 1: Nissan Dealer jacks up customer's car and makes it even worse than initial problem.

Step 2: Nissan Dealer denies all responsibility for something blatantly obvious.

Step 3: Nissan Dealer says "there is nothing we can do" and directs customer to call Nissan Corporate

Step 4: Nissan Corporate says "there is nothing we can do" and directs customer back to Dealership

Step 5: See Step 3 hahahahahaha

i called nissan consumer affairs. they said they called the dealer who told them the roof works fine, and it's just aesthetics, and since the car is 5 years old i just need to deal with it.
Consumer affairs told me to get a second opinion from another dealer, which i did, and was told that yeah it doesn't look right, the bungees are putting more pressure on one side of the car then the other. But they're not experts since this is Ohio and they're only seeing 1 convertible a year and it's usually the murano convertible. They said they could try to take it apart to diagnose but they're not sure how long it would take them to figure out the issue/solution - could take months. Mentioned that it may be something that a roof specialist shop is best to look at.

So i started looking at the roof rubber trim issue a little more to see if anything could be done. On each side of the car there is a small plastic clip that attaches the rubber trim to the roof. I think the uneven and very strong pressure from the new bungees is causing the clips to pop out and as a result the rubber trim ends up sticking out. i have attached a few photos.

This is such a shame Vman, sorry to here about your issues. Hope you can get it sorted but I don’t think l will look at this ‘fix’ anytime soon.

Met a guy today at a zday and he has just bought a new red roadster for$70k and his roof is hitting. He has had it looked at, they didn’t fix it and only managed to break something else. He said he is not too worried as he has warranty. Didn’t have the heart to tell that I think he is in for a world of hurt.

Strange how new cars do it when the issue is meant to be caused by the cords being stretched over time.

I will probably end up buying the original bungees and replace then at some stage as this appears to has helped some owners unless of course they can sort the clip issue out on this new fix

Unfortunately for me both dealer and nissan consumer affairs said they won't do anything else for my roof as i've used up the extended warranty (because roof was so expensive) and the 1 year new roof parts warranty is done. So i'm SOL

I've been thinking about trading it in for a porsche boxter (convertible). Wonder if those have any better quality. At least for now i have a new roof so shouldn't have any top material or hydraulic issues for a while.

Also the mechanic told me an interesting fact. Apparently after a while the roof seams start coming apart. Water gets into the seams (apparently there is electrical wiring behind one if the seems) and onto the wires. Water then rolls down the wires and into the roof control module / computer. This fries the computer which costs a few grand to replace the computer and wiring harness.

Update. I'm starting to notice the lid hitting the roof slightly, with the new bungee. Last two mornings kind of humid out about 65 degrees, lid hit the roof. So either the temperature/humidity or the number of times you use the roof is causing new bungee to start failing. It's only been two weeks with the new bungee.

This is VERY disheartening to hear. I am getting my car back from the dealership in a few hours. They told me that it is fixed. To hear that the new bungees are already causing issues is too much. Sorry vman.

NismoUFO let me know how it looks. Make sure you check for all the issues i mentioned in the post.

This morning it was fine again. I think the humidity and air temperature will cause the bungees to behave differently based on the day.
