Default How did I do on trade?

Just curious, talking $$$ numbers here, only. It's been a few years since I was in the car business, so I don't know how things may have changed.

I traded my 2012 370Z for a 2010 Grand Jeep Cherokee 5.7 Limited 4x4 2 weeks ago.

My 370Z:
-35.5K miles
-Sport/Touring/Nav/Manual
-Tires shot to ****, as in, white cords HANGING off of one where it wore un-evenly (I aligned it twice, that car just wouldn't hold alignment. Maybe see below?)
-2 Carfax accident reports (no structural damage, and no, neither were my fault)
-Some protective wrap still on the car
-Berk CBE (never fit well, one tip hangs because it won't stay hooked to the car/grommet)

The Jeep:
-Clean Carfax
-Tires 1/32 off the wear-bar
-69.9K miles
-Limited trim level with top of the line everything, Quadra Drive 2 (Jeep's highest level 4x4 system for that model), NAV, Heated front/rear seats/tow-hooks/skid plates, etc. etc. etc.

The asking for the Jeep was $22.4K. I got it for $21.2K. I was given $25.5K for my 370Z trade-in.

Wait... You had 2 accidents...
And you had problems with the car and bitched 24/7...

I wonder why...

Since you got more than $10k, you did good

All of the issues I complained about were pre-accident, save the alignment issue, and who knows on that. It wasn't my main concern.

One was a girl losing control of her SUV and side-swiping me (3 rims got scuffed, HID light, Tail-light, and front fender, bumper, and rear bumper.).
One was a bucket of electric wire pulling rope flying out of the back of a truck and hitting my bumper (bumper, driver's mirror as the rope wrapped around and "burned" it).

All replaced with OEM parts and the paint job looked OEM. You could not tell just looking at it, I would bet $ on that.

50% of MSRP, probably at about 25% of its life. Looks to have been garaged and pampered, still on the OEM set of tires, etc.

I wanted awd, more space, and more ground clearance. Also, I wanted a note that would remain at 12% or less of my D/I ratio after I move and lose all of my pay incentives. That capped me at around $450/mo or less.

The jeep offered awd, decent acceleration, nav, nice interior, etc. within that, and I've always liked that body style.

Also, my 370z was almost out from under warranty, and it had been a money pit of repairs. I didn't want to own it after 3/36.

I have yet to have met a WK owner who hated their jeep. Also, they have about lost all their fat on depreciation. The 4x4 hemi wk jeeps are getting hard to find and starting to hold value decently was what I saw on my hunt for one.

Anyway, that's the long answer.

The short answer? Read my threads. I hate Nissan and the 370z more than anyone else out there. Worst car i ever bought. YMMV.

There is another thread explaining why he traded. The question of this thread was did he get a good deal. I would say yes considering the price drop on the new models.

He got a good deal getting out of the Z. The mileage is too high on the replacement IMO, but if it made the other numbers work the Jeep can always be replaced in a few years.

Exactly. I want 5 years out of it. I think 200k miles is easily doable if maintained. I am pretty happy with what I pulled out of the deal. This thread was about dollars only though as others have said. Just curious if others think the money was smart is all.

The problem is you're picking up the car at 70k miles with no knowledge of how the previous owner maintained the car. No big deal, in a few years you can pick up another one and start over.

I think the price getting out of the Z was a good one, considering the price drop on new models and the accidents. I've never looked at Jeep pricing, so I can't comment there. The only catch on the numbers, and I can understand if you don't want to air it publicly, is that you were upside down on the Z, right? Or did you work your way out of that before you sold it?

I know who the previous owner is.
The vehicle is on OEM original tires.
Everything about it looks solid. It was a soccer-mom car. I have all of the service records, etc. Always dealer serviced.

I was definitely upside down on my 370Z. Badly. I am still upside down, in the Jeep, but most of the depreciation is knocked out of it by this point, and I am less upside down in it than I was in the 370Z. Part of the reason I jumped on it is that I got private party retail for trade-in (considering the BALD tires), even considering the $15K in damage done from 2 accidents, and the pruchase-price of the jeep (clean car-fax, powertrain warranty remaining, known service history) was also about private party retail. I feel that I would have been stupid to pass that up.

It makes more sense knowing the previous owner and how the car was treated.

She left her registration in the vehicle. It was a simple matter to do a quick Google on my Droid while I was at the dealer, as well as call a Dodge dealership and ask them to run the VIN and tell me what service was done. I had a CarFax on it, and called each reporting dealer on it. They gave me a list of everything ever done to it at a dealer. Also, she left her photo-album in the NAV system. I just scrolled through and saw what kind of stuff she was into. It was mostly just pictures of well adjusted family activities such as weddings and birthday parties for children. The fact that it was sitting on factory tires and has an engine with almost 400# of torque told me a lot, as well.

It's scary what you can accomplish in 5 minutes with technology...

if you're happy with the purchase and price you paid, that's all that matters at the end.
